Purchasing a dog off Kijiji

What sort of protocol etc. needs to be done?
I've bought many cars off craigslist etc. simple vehicle transfer form etc. LOL
Thanks in advance!

just make sure the dog's in good health and go get a vet exam. if its from a breeder, check the rep of them. if from a private seller, then be a little cautious. I got my min pin off kijiji from a private seller because her other dog of 13 years wouldnt get along with him. Took him for exams, looked healthy and to this day, he's happy as can be. Got him fro a fraction of wat it cost at a breeder but just no papers. However he seems to have champion blood in him as he's very attractive looking and have the hackney gait, which for min pins only come in champion bloodlines.

So wait, how do you go about registering yourself as the owner?
And for a vet exam, it's not like this is petcetera right, if you buy a dog, and it turns out to have cancer or something, what do you do then?
Please don't flame me i'm 16 and have never purchased a dog online before

Don't think you'll be flamed. I'm happy to see someone wanting to do his due diligence before jumping right in. I'm not sure how the procedure is. I guess you could stipulate the sale completing after you have had the dog checked out. Shouldn't be much different than having a mechanic check out a car before you buy it. I know it sounds cold, but you don't want a dog that will cost you thousands in the long run.

Puppies should already be vet checked, so you can ask for a report, or ask what vet it was vet-checked at and just talk to that vet. If the puppy/puppies haven't been vet-checked, then ask them to get the puppy vet-checked. They may or may not ask you to put down a deposit in this case. If they refuse to do so, then just walk away and find another puppy from someone else. That's how I bought my dog and I did run into people who refused to get the puppies vet-checked. They have no reason to not have them checked since you would get the puppy after 8-12 weeks and they should already have some shots taken at the vet anyway...

This isn't exactly buying a dog online. I'm assuming you're only looking at ads online, correct? - Not shipping the dog from across the country or wherever...If you are having your dog shipped, I wouldn't recommend it unless your buying from a reputable breeder. You have no idea what kind of environment the puppies are in otherwise. There are books that actually list reputable dog breeders in Canada organized by breed and it gives their contact information. You can find these books at your local library.

As for registering yourself as an owner, I'm not sure if I know what you mean by that. You just buy the puppy.

"Every dog over the age of six months is required by the City of Surrey to have a license. Any dog deemed dangerous requires a dog license immediately. Licenses may be purchased at the By-law & Licensing Section of the City Hall."

I think that's what you mean. Here's a link to the dog licensing application: http://www.surrey.ca/NR/rdonlyres/B9...DogLicense.pdf

Hope that helps.

No there's no forms. You just buy the dog and it's yours. Looks like your in Van so here's some information on getting a dog license and the bylaw.

Developed aggression. I think if your dog is reported as attacking a couple times or something, it gets deemed as dangerous.

racerman88 09-03-2009 09:46 AM

I think that is where my wife found a breeder for our dog.

The vet check is the main thing. And if your buying a puppy, something less then 6mnths old, I would want to see the mother as well. The pups temperment will be very similiar to moms. above 6 mnths it will be easy to see what the temperment is like. Good luck and have fun with your new dog. I hope you are prepared for what it can cost for a emergency vet visit. if not wait and call a vet office to ask then take time to think about getting a dog.

Yea they keep records of how many times a dog gets reported and to my understanding once it gets to a certain number they deem it. Perhaps that number shrinks based on the seriousness of said incident but i'm just guessing here.

when i meant register, i meant with the CKG, not the city. I think that happens at birth, cant just bring any dog to get registered. You pretty much wont need it if you dont show your dog. So if you buy a dog from a private sale on kijiji without CKG registration, you wont be able to show it is all i meant.

Lil Bastrd 09-09-2009 10:32 AM

CKC registration is not just for show. If the parents don't have papers then the seller can not claim that the pups are purebred. The nice thing with CKC papers is it has a tattoo # that matches the one on the dog. If your dog were to end up in a pound they can check with the CKC to see if they have record of that tattoo. This gets them your contact #.
