Need advice ASAP

Hey guys,

Im looking into buying this car. It has very very low km's for a 2006 model. It is from a legitimate big dealership

Is there anyway i can tell if the odometer has been rolled back. The icbc check is good, but i have no service records - maybe one oil change.

If i get it inspected will they be able to tell if its been tampered with?. This is a digital type odometer.

Also who should i get to inspect it? BCAA? some of the cars say inspected by BCAA already - have to double check if this one is. If its already been inspected by BCAA do i trust that? Im thinking no...but then who else can i get to check the car for me

Any help appreciated...need to act fast

thanks

Digital odometer is nearly impossible to scam - The only way I've ever seen it done is by changing the complete cluster assy.

Make sure you have carproof, also check to see if the car is under the manufacturer's recertified plan..

Big dealerships have 2 types of used cars, one certified by manufacturers.. (usually better grade).. vs none (eg customer trade in), the none is just like any used car. At any dealership, they mixs both and very rarely the shopper.

Also check the return policy.

So buyer beware.

How many km's are we talking about? And what is the price of the car? Is it too low for the year of car compared to others in the market?

Sometimes some things are too good to be true.

8,000-9,000km on a 2006...so it is quite low

car is priced at about the same as others with higher Km or at different dealerships...its fair pricing - not too low or too high

carproof is definitely the best for a canadian car.
that is quite low in KM, maybe its a summer car only for the previous owner, etc?

8000-9000km for a car thats nearly 4-5 years old>?

WTF

The only car that I can think of is a Cavalier. :lol

one oil change in 3-4 years? lol
If i were you, i would be extra careful with a mechanical inspection.

Here's my guess:
a) the owner loved the car so much, he/she barely drove it (not likely, since the car is for sale)
b) the car was used for short trips, which usually means the car doesn't get driven long enough for it to properly warm up, before it's shut down again. Which is a good way to ruin a motor quickly.
c) the owner hated the car so much, they never used it..lol

My guess is it's option B, which is why i recommend you doing a very thorough mechanical inspection.

That only applies to US cars.. in Europe there are plenty of tools that can get around that.

not really. There are shops that will fix milage error on a digital odometer.

the quick way to check is to do a ECU scan. It will tell the more accurate milage on the car than your cluster. Of course you need the digital reader tool

godwin 09-03-2009 06:52 PM

No.. the videos above are done via ECU.. if the cluster and ECU are different, the dash usually display an error.. in a BMW it will be a light next to the odometer.

The most accurate way is actually check the fuel/liter used.. howeve reven that can be reprogrammed but not everyone go to that extent.

Carproof is clear.....not sure wat to do....might take the plunge..its a lease return..doesnt make sense to change it to that low kms...supposedly the guy got a company car never drove his leased car....possible? maybe...

godwin 09-03-2009 11:16 PM

If carproof is clear, and the dealership's own mechanics sign off on it.. and the warranty is to your satisfaction.. just take the plunge and enjoy your purchase! The subarus which my company leases for me get about 3k a year if even.
