u can see majority of the screen is fked, there is 1 strip on the top of the screen that looks normal.
can anyone suggest anything i can check or do?
i looked arnd ebay and found replacement screens for 80ish+shipping.

also this laptop is a 4 year old Samsung R60.

For the screen it can only be 2 things... The acctual LCD($100) or the inverter board($10)... If I were you just trouble shooot buy purchasing a inverterboard on ebay and replace that.. If that doesnt work then its not worth fixing... New notebooks cost $500...

i will try and replace the inverter first, BUT, i can't seem to find any on ebay.

does anyone know where i can find a LCD inverter locally, or know where the samsung repair facility is locally?

It's not the inverter that is your problem. Inverters will show as a problem with the backlight.

^ then do u have any other suggestions?

The laptop is fairly old and quite outdated now. It'd be best to hook it up to the TV or an external monitor, and just buy your mom a new one.

Or buy a busted laptop of the same model or (model that is very close to it) and scrap it for parts. I did this for my GF and cost me a total of $30.

^ yea i thoguht about that but it's kinda hard to do when the model is only sold from overseas i believe.

either the vertical or horizontal controller is partly gone. Either way the controllers are usually attached to the LCD screen so ordering a new screen should fix it.

Have you tried plugging in an external monitor, to make sure there is no problem with the video chip? If the external monitor doesn't work then changing the LCD won't help.

yes i hooked up an external monitor and it works so my mom can continue to use it.
but i still prefer to get the screen fixed.

So with a bad inverter you could use say the flashlight trick so see if there's video still on the screen, if there is then it's the inverter, if no video then it's something else, yes?

Prolly an issue with the signal cable or the controller board. As others have mentioned, inverter issues would cause the backlight to go out.

Wiggle the ribbon cable around to see if it fixes anything.
