Accommodation in Hong Kong & Macau
 

I'm planning to visit Hong Kong and Macau in February 2010, a week before Chinese New Years and the Olympics.

I've never been to Hong Kong in my life and funny fact - I was born in Macau but never returned. I want to go back to see what HK and Macau is really like and I'd like to see it for myself. And yes, I'm a FOB. I emigrated to Canada without papers. :p

Can anybody recommend affordable accommodation, preferably in Macau? I'd like to stay in Macau over Hong Kong...just cuz...but HK will do too! :)

Not sure why you'd want to stay in Macau, unless you're only going for a few days. There's really not much to do there except go to casinos and eat. It's fun to visit for a few days, but after that you'll probably get bored of it.

What is "affordable" for you?

I'm only planning to stay in Macau for a few days. It looks like the hotels can, and will cost an arm and a leg.

Affordable - something under $150CDN per night. I'm assuming a good rule of thumb is that there is maybe $6HKD to $1CDN? Sorry for my HK n00bness.

You should be able to find a place for under $150 a night, just check all the hotels (Venetian, Hard Rock, Wynn, etc) for deals. They are normally about $1500 HKD per night, which is just over $200 CAD (the rate is about 7.2 right now, but it has been as high as 8.0 in recent months and as low as 6.8 in the last year, so who knows what it will be then). Make sure to get a package that includes your ferry from HK.

I always stay at the Westin when I go to Macau. It is on the very south end, away from all the noise, bullshit, and mainlanders. I do get a family employee rate, but I would go there even if I didn't. The rate is about $1200 HKD, and there is a 15% discount if you book early. It is kind of out of the way, but there is a shuttle that goes to the venetian and the two ferry terminals. The best restaurant in Macau is just down the beach from it - you MUST go to Fernando's if you go to Macau.

It's only around CA$700 a week with sea view, even cheaper if you are ok with no sea view and just a studio. Interest is extra though and was slow when I was there over a year ago.

For Hong Kong. I can suggest Prudential Hotel.
Iv been back to HK about 6 times now. And finally I found a hotel thats inexpensive, newly rennovated, great location, seconds from the train, 900HKD + fees.
