BURNABY (NEWS1130) - The Transit Police chief's annual report says crime is down in-and-around SkyTrain stations. The report says between May 2008 and April 2009, reported crimes within 100 metres of a SkyTrain station were down nearly four per cent compared to the previous 12 month period. Crimes within stations were down more than 31 per cent.
The crime rate at Surrey Central Station, often cited as a high crime area for members of the public, plunged 46 per cent, from 4.96 incidents per 100,000 passenger boardings, to 2.68. The report credits Chief Ward Clapham's 44-point safety plan for much of the crime reduction. Under the plan, police and SkyTrain Attendant presence has been increased at-and-around key stations. An upgrade of the CCTV system to digital capture was also completed in the summer of 2008. |
