They're lying.

If they are coming into the country/coming back, they are asked a bunch of questions and then afterwards, they get a slip, the slip either means free to go or get searched.

/thread.

Well there is.. its called Nexus... You gotta pay for that and they do a ton of security checks before you can get it.

penner2k 09-17-2009 08:57 PM

and with Nexus they will do random checks..

I've read that some US airports are and have been trying a "fast track" system where US residents can swipe their passport but before they can do this they have to go in for an interview and get an extensive background check.

In this day in age where you're basically naked when you go through security, I doubt it’ll be much of a benefit when all things are said and done because I’m sure most people will get stopped for a secondary check using this type of system.

If you're talking about coming in to Canada, the CBSA has set up an electronic counter which is similar to a checkout counter for flights. I used it, and it's not significantly faster....though you don't really have to talk to a CBSA agent for such a long time.

When I came back from Korea, I was asked if I wanted to try the new automated system.

It scans your passport and your customs declaration. It prints a number code saying 'search' 'clarify' or 'pass' and then you go through.

I went through customs in about 2 minutes. My flight landed 15 minutes early and I was out of customs and into the waiting area 5 minutes before my flight was supposed to land.

my parents got nexus. dad goes to states to play golf all the time. he knows very little english so the people at nexus didnt bother asking him any complicated questions and just approved him for one. he said it was so fast to go to states, just show them the card and youre through.
my mom on the other hand knows english and she said that 3 different interviewees asked her a myriad of questions...some just rediculous...

"whats your occupation?"
"housewife"
"so you dont work?"
"no i stay at home"
"what do you do at home all day?"

LOL

bingo. same for me when i got back from japan about a month ago. scanned passport and customs declaration sheet into the automated machine and i was done in 5 minutes and surpassed the huge lineup for the regular customs.

I'm guessing it will be a random assignment, like every 30th person or something, or perhaps there will be a controller sitting somewhere staring at you from a hidden camera

leelu 09-18-2009 12:21 AM

I went through the automated machines in august. Its much faster and it basically just replaces the customs officer. You just have to insert your declaration card, swipe your passport and answer some questions. Then the machine spits back out your declaration card with a stamp on it, like how the customs person usually writes stuff on the back. There's also a guy that checks your card and he might ask you a question pertaining to your card and then after that you're through.

Really, very fast and convenient. There was basically no line up for these machines, so it was just swipe, press a couple of buttons and you're off!

MWR34 09-18-2009 03:19 AM

Its no better than Mexico, lol. Randomly generated inspections.

as you arrive to stay in Mexico, after getting your luggage, you pass through some sorta customs. you press a button, and Randomly it will flash Red or Green. Green Means GO, Red means open every piece of luggage and get the bilingual hassle/search senor.

you! 09-18-2009 08:44 AM

no way if they dont do it anymore then customs wouldnt even exist

murd0c 09-18-2009 09:10 AM

The machine kinda sounds like the button u have to push when you arrive in mexico. What is the point of that anyways?

misteranswer 09-18-2009 09:49 AM

At the moment, I think it's only fast because a lot of people don't want to use it so they hop into the regular line up. Once more people are willing to use it and they start to reallocate officers to other duties, it probably won't be any faster.

With the Nexus pass, you have a even higher percentage of being searched by customs.
