Car safety advancement - 1959 vs. 2009

In celebration of the Insurance Institure for Highway Safety's 50th anniversary, a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air was crashed into a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu.

Visually demonstrating how far automobile safety has come in 50 years.

^^there would be an auto eject option where the occupants of the vehicle shoots out of the car once an impact is sensed and parachutes would deploy from the seats for a safe landing

tonyvu 09-18-2009 01:21 PM

holly shit, the driver of the old car got smashhheddd

So you need those huge panoramic sunroofs on every car.

!LittleDragon 09-18-2009 02:46 PM

What a waste of a classic car :(

that would be pretty sweet, parasuite equipped!

Lomac 09-18-2009 03:42 PM

That's quite impressive.

Sad about them crashing the Bel Air, though. :(

JSALES 09-18-2009 04:06 PM

i feel bad for the bel air, such a nice car

Solo_D33A 09-18-2009 04:24 PM

That would suck if you were in a tunnel..

spoon.ek9 09-18-2009 06:31 PM

gg bel air!

is it just me or does it look like the driver of the malibu would suffer from a lot more than just minor knee injuries from that? most ppl break both legs from crashes like these. but hey, i'm no expert.

fliptuner 09-18-2009 10:06 PM

Not exactly what I would expect.

Same here...I thought the Bel Air, being the beast that it is, would do better...
I'm glad I drive a car made in the 21st century :D

LOL, exactly what I was thinking when I first watched the video as well.

And imagine how safe cars will be say 20 years from now.

Soundy 09-19-2009 12:59 AM

Notice how the glass from the Bel Air pops out and pwns the driver of the Malibu :D

ilvtofu 09-19-2009 08:40 AM

Wow didn't expect that, how fast were they going?

gnat. 09-19-2009 09:12 AM

the malibu like ATE the bel air!!!
even the windshield went flying! holy crap!

unit 09-19-2009 10:10 AM

pretty impressive, however i cant help but wonder if the malibu only did so well because it crashed into something that crumples so easily. if the malibu crashed into something more solid it would have looked very different. a more fair comparison would be to crash them both against the same car. still cool to watch though
