Guessing its clutch if its standard. If it's automatic, maybe clutch disks inside. Check the fluid.

If you think its the transmission then go to a transmission shop (a trusted one, go to a couple to see if their recommendations are similar).

Almost all transmission shops will take a test drive of the car and then give you their conclusions/recommendations for free.

It's not your transmission although it is a major proponent to all of this. My suspicion is that your clutch is toast. Time for a new one.

Here's a failsafe method in testing to see if it is indeed your clutch.

1. Drive normally in a quiet street. Don't speed.
2. Get to maybe 3rd gear at around 2000-2500rpm
3. Downshift into 2nd - blip throttle 4000-5000rpm.
4. If your clutch catches and drops to normal operating rpm:
4a. Your clutch if okay (sort of - based on the situation at least)
4b. If it doesn't and it floats up top, your clutch is failblog.org

Happy testing!

^ To add to that. If the clutch is really toast. You can try and put the car in 4th. Slowly let the clutch pedal out and see if it stalls or not.

Sorry if I didn't clarify it properly. Usually if the clutch is toast the car wouldn't stall. Obviously you don't let it out quickly but slowly. A clutch with a decent amount of friction material will stall the car regardless how slowly you release the pedal in 4th gear.

Another optional test you could do would be throwing the car into second at around 4,000-5,000 RPM. Much like what "BCRDUKES" have said. The RPM's should drop back to "normal" operating RPMs. Or another similar way to test the car would be accelerating the car at 2nd to 4,000RPM Plus. "If' your clutch is toast, there would most likely be a jump in RPMs. It is quite noticeable as you can hear your engine suddenly rev higher but your car's speed wouldn't correspond to the pick up properly.

If I'm not clear on what I said feel free to ask.

Being that the car is 6 years old and I assume you never changed the clutch, I would bet the clutch is starting to go (worn out) and needs to be replaced.

Just take it to a shop and have it checked out. Based on you asking the forums for help, I highly doubt you are going to change the clutch yourself so save yourself some time and take it to a mechanic before the clutch fails completely and you need the car towed.

I did that with my old NX. On my way to the mechanic, the clutch was slipping so badly that I could barely get up some of the hills in Vancouver and it finally gave up 2 blocks from the shop. Luckily, the shop had a 4x4 and some chains to tow my car to the shop. And since the disc was out of material, I was metal on metal with the flywheel. Luckily I was going to put in a lightened flywheel because I ruined the stock flywheel from the rivets in the friction disc.

^ What he said. Doing all those "checks" might wear your flywheel/clutch more till it's barely drivable. So drive it to the shop while you still can.

It was so bad, I could put the car into 1st gear and the engine wouldn't stall even though the car isn't moving.

You have a bad clutch, cease driving and get it fixed. You will only do more damage by continuing to drive.

its your clutch.
go get it checked. the more you drive it the more damage your car will take.
just fork it up a the money for your clutch or else you will have to pay for a new fly wheel too.
