Internet poster threatens life of Dalai Lama

Authorities are on alert after an Internet poster called for the death of the Dalai Lama, days before the spiritual leader is due to visit Vancouver.

The threat showed up on a Vancouver Internet chat site and was first reported in a Chinese-language newspaper.

"Is there anyone willing to risk death to dedicate themselves/repay their country and assassinate Dalai," the posting reads. "I'll pay money. If can't assassinate throwing a shoe is okay too."

The site has since been taken down. The poster has not been identified.

RCMP officials say the Dalai Lama will be afforded the highest security, though they won't discuss specifics.

"We are aware of the threat, but as you can appreciate we don't discuss threats made against individuals and how we react to them," said RCMP Sgt. Greg Cox.

Andre Gerolymatos, a security expert, said he expects there will be a highly visible police presence around the Dalai Lama.

"And you won't notice the undercover officers who will be milling with the crowd," he said.

Gerolymatos said Internet postings can spur people into action.

"The threat, I think, is quite real and quite substantial," he said.

The Dalai Lama is one of six Nobel laureates scheduled to attend a peace summit at UBC's Chan Centre on Sunday. Other attendees are Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mairead Maguire, Betty Williams, Jody Williams and Murray Gell-Mann.

The event has been sold out.

The Dalai Lama is a noted speaker and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. But the exiled leader of the Tibetan Buddhists also has enemies.

He says the Chinese government is working to crush the Tibetan culture. China claims Tibet has always been part of its territory.

With a report from CTV British Columbia's Lisa Rossington

I heard murd0c was paid to make a humiliating scene for the Dalai such as throwing a shoe, pie, etc. and also murd0c would be paid triple if he succesfully executed an assassination.

One Million Yen is worth approximately $12,000
One Million Yuan is worth approximately $160,000

Yen is the currency of Japan
Yuan is the currency of China

You fail at foreign exchange.

PS.
Fourty?

correction. for the past 500 years.

that's longer than the white man's rule in canada and even the united states.

Went to see the Dalai Lama and the Noble Prize winners today it was great!, Desmond Tutu was supposed to be there too but he injured his back so he did a video msg and had his daughter show up

Eckhart Tolle author of books such as "The Power of Now" Also founder of Ebay, Pierre Omidyar etc etc were there too

It was great, too bad Dalai Lama was late everything was cut short by like 30mins

and after that it was Steve Martin at night

edit: on another note if someone did want to do harm to any of the guests they could have easily... there was virtually NO security, no metal detectors, no searching nothing just the odd police or security personel standing at a corner

you would think with all these distinguished ppl especially the multi-million/billionaires that security would be tighter... unless they had like x-ray cameras, etc scanning and smelling ppl ;)

ZhangFei 09-28-2009 04:11 PM

God was there.

observer 09-28-2009 05:26 PM

Did they bother inviting one single Muslim representative?

No, which was kind of retarded considering they took a day off today to honour Yom Kippur and they had a rep for the other biggies, they might have a rep on Tuesday each discussion had different guests

Desmond Tutus video message and Eckhart Tolle were the most interesting the Dalai Lama, tbh, sounded like a befuddled senior citizen but it was cool to see him

StaxBundlez 09-28-2009 06:35 PM

that's right.... ALL THE TEA
