Planning to buy a laptop..

Hi. My cousin is planning to buy a new laptop. Shes looking to spend about 500 or less. Shes looking for the basic stuff. Just a normal laptop that will be used for like internet use, work files, maybe a little bit of music here and there. nothing to crazy. Shes looking into getting an acer, compaq or toshiba. Shes not really sure which one. What do you guys think is a good one for $500 or less?

Netbook???

Based off your info it doesnt look like she needs anything to do with a dvd drive so she would probably best be off with a netbook... PLus they are light and easy to carry around especially for a girl... If you are to go netbook I recommend Asus... For a regular notebook go with Dell as their warranty is the best out there... The only reason I dont recommend toshiba and compaq is because chances are I know you will prolly look for them @ BB and FS... Well those cheap notebooks are 1year lasting notebooks especially how people treat them nowadays... They should make all notebooks light and rugged.

Wait for next NCIX sale, pick up cheap Lenovo G-series (value line) for $500ish. Very solid laptop with good set of features, and it'll last longer than the HP/Acer/Compaq crap you'd find at BB/FS.

@ Dragon-88, maybe she doesn't want the tiny screen on a netbook, I know I can't really deal with that. :(

Wait until Windows 7 is out on October 22 first ...

Pick up still available in store. $450 + Free Windows 7 upgrade+ 5+ hours battery. Very slim and light weight (3lb). Also has HDMI connection which plays 1080p output to TV fine.

Much faster than any netbook (Atom) available yet doesn't run hot. Stack Staple coupons and I got it for $360. But even at $450, it's a decent deal. Sales ends tomorrow I think.

It also mistaken as only B/G. It does have N.

Dont forget to look at Dell. this is the time that Dell starts doing deals.

Also dont worry about waiting till Windows 7, most laptops have a free upgrade now.

Yeah, because everyone wants to wait 2.5 months for Windows 7 to come (and you may have to pay for shipping & handling from the manufacturer) instead of just waiting 2 weeks for it to actually be released ...

well, to be fair, the upgrade is free and free shipping.

I ordered mine already. It should ship out on 22nd without any charge.
but 2.5 months could be true. :haha: My Vista upgrade came about 2 months after Vista is on the store shelf.

Not all manufacturers are offering free shipping ...

Lenovo.. value stuff is not so good. Nothing special about the G series vs. anything else out there.. Run of the mill.

asus eepc

I wouldn't use a netbook as my main computer though.

liu13 10-19-2009 11:37 PM

^ i've been using the same toshiba laptop for the past 6 years as my main at home, which is effin incredible for today's standards

1.3ghz 500 ram too pretty sad but you just need to unclutter the thing a bit

btw, i have a dual core 2gb laptop for 450$ if u want, very good condition, used for under 1 year

Senna4ever 10-19-2009 11:47 PM

That's more than you need for internet, e-mail & office applications.
