I would remove the breeders part and say just adopt from shelters or rescues. Do you know what breed you want? There's MANY breed specific rescue groups who will go out of their way to get the right dog for you.

However OP, please do consider adopting an abandoned a dog from the SPCA or something. It really goes a long way for the dog you'd be helping.

Anyways, my family got a 2 year old chihuahua from Pets Wonderland. It's previous owner was moving and asked to leave the dog in the care of the shop owners. My parents went in just to get a new dog jacket for my existing dog and found the chihuahua sniffing around behind the counter. He was pretty scared of humans but he has an overall good demeanor and is extremely playful. He definitely wasn't damaged goods because of the store but obviously from longterm neglect at his previous owner's place.

Pets Wonderland is pretty ok. But the owners are Chinese so prepared to bargain hard if you want to haggle.

how do you know his nervousness wasn't due to genetic markup, because the shop owner told you the dog was abused? It is possible to to purchase a perfectly fine dog from any pet store, the problem lies in that its basically a lottery system. Breeder breed for temperament and health above all else. The pet store may have good intentions but the fact that they breed several breeds at once and is not involve with the breed beside making a male dog fuck another female dog means they would not take the care or possible not know how to breed for best temperament and health. They breed for maximum profit, everything else is not so important

They are in it for the money, do you think they would pay to have testing done? do you think they would invest in purchasing dog from other bloodline to strengthen genetic of their own puppies?

Look at the businse tactic. free vet check + 1 year gurantee. A reputable breeder may not be able to afford free vet check for every single puppy but they can guarantee no genetic defect for the LIFETIME of the puppy.

Most genetic problem don't show up until later in a pup's life.....

Did pets wonderland resell the 2 yr old chinhuahua to you? if so that is very unethical. Even if the nervousness was not genetic, selling you a dog that both you AND the store knows is imperfect is already bad signs. If you want to rescue the animal you could of have thousand of choices from the shelter who doesn't profit from unbalance dogs. If pets wonderland sold you the chinhuahua, they just made double on a single dog, selling it to the original owner than selling it again to you.

If you are buying other things like cars and electronic would you put so much faith into everything a sales say?

here an article from the provinces. food for thought.

There are so many animals (this includes birds and other creatures) at the pounds, as well as breed specific rescues and good breeders that I hope people take the time to do their research.

www.ckc.ca has a club list area where you can search for a breed club. Most of them run or know of breed specific rescues.
A dog is for life so do your homework.

buy your pet straight from a breeder or rescue a pet. Go to a local pet supply store and you will see posters of dogs for adoption. Or go to the animal shelter.
