Shittiest flight ever

So I was flying from LA to Vancouver with Air Canada. We took off and 20 minutes into the flight black smoke started to come out and we dropped to a much lower altitude. 5 mins later of people whispering the captain finally goes on the PA and says we have to turn around and land back in LA.. "we'll be there in 20 minutes but it seems the engines are fine". We keep lowering in altitude and I'm questioning whether or not the captain is jerking our chains to prevent panic. Engines seemed to be at a quiet whisper compared to usually the loud noise. As we approach the airport we all see tons of blue and red lights approaching..

needless to say we landed, got rushed by emergency vehicles and escorted into the waiting lounge at the airport. 45 mins later they tell us that grease in one of the ovens caught on fire and that's what the black smoke was.... FUN!

did i mention i already had a phobia of flying prior to this and have to take ativan to fly as is?

so i loaded up on ativan, a few drinks and took another plane back to vancouver an hour later

Props to the crew for getting it down safely... Stop panicing about flights, shit happens. The reason you dropped in altitude is the fact that they probably depressurized the aircraft to get rid of the smoke. They can't stay at a high altitude or you will pass out pretty quickly.. The reason the engines seems quieter was because they weren't working as hard... you were descending, they were most likely at idle!

Did AC give you, the passengers, any sort of freebies? Like drink/food vouchers? My guess is no. On a side note, I flew in from TO to Vancouver Sat night. Our flight was delayed because the plane was delayed from London. Because of the hour delay, they offered all passengers a free cocktail which was quite shocking.

AC has the worst inflight system. No map feature on most flights, no games, updates are too slow but their movie selection is decent. Also the system itself has way too many issues. During our flight the system had to be rebooted 3 times. I still remember reading stories about how AC had to keep a tech on flights from Sydney - Vancouver because the system had so many issues.

Had a similar experience once in Australia, flying from Brisbane to Cairns (2h flight). All the TVs and lights flickered out about 1h (I'm guessing just before halfway) into the flight, and the captain says all is well, of course. 5 mins later, the pilot says we're turning back to Brisbane, and promptly does a 180. It was an eerie and quiet flight going all the way back, and yeah, a lot people thought it was GG for all of us. It was a really hard landing back at Brisbane, but amazingly the flight crew all played it cool. Thank goodness the batteries were able to last the duration of the trip or we would've been a crater.

The free alcohol was offered on the Toronto - Vancouver flight because the plane we were on, the A330, was delayed coming in from London. AC basically shuttles the plane back from Toronto so they can use it on the Vancouver - Seoul route.

why do you need a map on a plane. you already know where your going + ur not even doing the flying.

i rmb last year i had a flight were some guy was complaining loudly how his monitor didnt have the map feature and was questioning where he was going to -_-

Which AC plane were you flying? When I fly overseas, I enjoy AC the most. I have flown EVA Air, Cathay, United and AC and AC by far has the best in flight entertainment. I think it just depends on which type of plane you get, airbus or boeing.
