A long-time suspect in the October 2002 murder of Chinese student Wei Amanda Zhao in British Columbia has been arrested in China, after local officials acted on information provided by RCMP.

Chinese authorities quietly arrested Li Ang, Zhao's boyfriend at the time of her death, and his cousin, Zhang Han, this summer.

The victim's mother, 63-year-old Yang Baoying, said she felt "pretty calm" after hearing the news.

"Why? Because even if (the killer) is chopped into muddy flesh, it won't ease my hatred," she said during an interview with CTV British Columbia and The Globe and Mail.

"Two gold mountains can't bring back my child. My child ... was the ultimate goal of my life. So after I heard this news, I didn't feel shocked or excited or ... I felt it was a natural result."

Li had been the primary suspect in Zhao's murder, but he fled to China after the young woman's body was found in a duffel bag in a wooded area near Mission, B.C., about 80 kilometres east of Vancouver.

Eleven days earlier, Li had reported Zhao missing, telling police she had taken a trip to a store and hadn't returned.

RCMP investigators alleged that Zhang helped Li dispose of Zhao's body.

All three were Chinese nationals sharing an apartment as they attended school in B.C.

The RCMP charged Li, now 26, with second-degree murder, but jurisdictional disputes between Canadian and Chinese authorities have blocked his return to Canada.

Zhang, also 26, had originally confessed to helping Li, but that confession was thrown out on allegations it was not lawfully obtained.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Tuesday that he had heard of the arrests and said Chinese authorities were working closely with RCMP and Canadian officials on the case.

"We're glad to see, and I hope it brings some comfort to the family, the fact that a suspect is now in custody," Harper said when asked about the case during a news conference in Vancouver.

"Obviously there are multiple steps to ultimately have a trial and determine guilt or innocence. But we are committed to working fully with our Chinese counterparts to resolve this issue and get a conviction of those who are responsible."

It is not yet clear if Li and Zhang will face charges in China or be extradited to Canada.
i'm guessing they'll ship them back here instead of using the chinese death vans. too bad.

They said on the news he will stand trial in China but will not face the death penalty.

unit 10-14-2009 01:15 AM

wow justice served!
i remember following this pretty close back in 02.
she supposedly went for a walk to safeway and disappeared.
the guy called the cops and the cops didnt even suspect him of anything.
they let him leave the country without being suspicious about it, and later considered him a suspect but he was long gone.

StylinRed 10-14-2009 01:16 AM

well his mom is some sort of a big-shot

so im quite shocked they took him in, even though they took this long to do so

a death penalty would have been out of the question because of his family anyhow

supposedly after the girls family came to Canada to plea for justice they were threatened and silenced when they got back to China

slammer111 10-14-2009 03:25 AM

Better late than never. But glad they caught the guy. I just hope gets a long sentence in a redneck prison if he gets convicted; none of this probation crap.

Alphamale 10-14-2009 04:29 AM

That's a sick title you have for this thread. Just sick.

SumAznGuy 10-14-2009 12:04 PM

Another news article said he wasn't going to be sent back to CAnada to stand trial, and that both him and his cousin will be tried in China.

And Ang Li's dad is a high ranking official in the army, so I think they will be found innocent. Justice will prevail.

It's always good to have a powerful dad.

Ed, are you implying the two who fled the country are not a party to the murder? If so, do you know who did this? I'm curious what your take on justice is in regards to this case.

Kev

Kev

no he's saying China isnt going to do anything, they're gonna find these suspects not guilty because of who their parents are

spoon.ek9 10-14-2009 06:32 PM

unfortunately status > all

the guys will probably be found guilty of a lesser charge, see a short jail sentence and then be put on probation. and that's probably as bad as it will get for them.

on another note, what an unnecessarily long title for this thread.

Haha. StylinRed read me right.

Don't worry Kev, right from day one when Zhao went missing, I told the wife "the BF did it" and she asked me how I knew. Too bad I am not as accurate with my 6/49 choices.

m4k4v4li 10-14-2009 07:01 PM

6/49 is for the mathematically challenged

you are more likely to get killed by a meteorite than win the 6/49

that is a fact btw.

the chances of winning by not playing is zero, that's fact too btw :P

but yeah, hardly gonna happen.

SumAznGuy 10-14-2009 07:16 PM

That or spend $28Mill and buy a sure win ticket. Only down side is, if there is multiple winners, then you are out lots of money.
But I digress.

Back on topic.

Not saying i believe in conspiracy's, but even if Li and his cuz was found guilty, I wouldn't be surprised if their parents paid someone/people and their kids never see a day in prison.

StylinRed 10-14-2009 09:02 PM

his moms like a high ranking official/executive or something for chinese airline or something or other ;)

I thought they worked it out to like 16.9 mill or sth? if i was a billionaire i'd fuck around winning the lottery and stuff, even though i didn't need it, and use $100's to light my smokes...

let's do some math

pack a day... = 20 smokes = $2000 used to light the pack = assuming 365 days a year = $730,000 in burnt money.

hmm, sounds like i know what im doing when im rich.

oh, and my on-topic contribution. Meh. don't care.
