Free-revving = bad?

Can someone explain to me why free-revving(neutral) an engine is bad?

Free reving is not always bad. Excessive free reving is. Meaning excessive RPM's but thats bad in gear or not. When in neutral its just much easier to over rev your motor due to a lack of load. Usually the product of over reving is valve float which can lead to catastrophic damage especially if you have an interference engine.
