Bought computer in September, Windows 7 free upgrade?

Hey, So i searched the forum and didn't find the topic here. I bought my new laptop just this September and I'm hearing that im eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7. Does anyone know how this works or has anyone actually registered for their copy?

hey guys, sorry to bump this up but I just got a Gateway LT31 laptop for my mom that has Vista on it, and I want to do the free upgrade to 7. However, when I go to the Gateway site and get redirected to the Mentor Media site and enter the serial, it tells me that it is invalid or does not qualify for an upgrade. I am wtfing right now, could it have to do with the LT31 not having an optical drive?

MS isn't offering it on units that come w/ Windows XP or Windows Vista Home Basic, which appear to be the OSes offered on that particular unit.

Windows XP Home > No Free Upgrade
Windows XP Professional > No Free Upgrade
Windows Vista Home Basic > No Free Upgrade
Windows Vista Home Premium > Free Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade*
Windows Vista Business > Free Windows 7 Professional Upgrade*
Windows Vista Ultimate > Free Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade*

*If manufacturer deems unit eligible for free upgrade

Beyond that, the manufacturer may restrict what units are eligible at their discretion including, but not limited to, models, retailers, date of purchase, date of manufacturing, country of purchase, etc.
