How to turn pumpkins into celebrities At first glance, they look like the crude carvings of a child, but once these Hallowe'en pumpkins are lit they reveal a whole ghost of famous faces. From Mick Jagger to David Beckham and Simon Cowell, David Finkle (right) has carved them all from vegetables grown on his farm in Chelmsford, Essex. 'I came up with the idea after a local pub competition to see who could carve the best design,' he says. 'I started with ghosts, but this year decided on celebrities instead.' David, 30, learned to create the detailed portraits through trial and error, and each takes around three hours. First, he sketches the face from a photograph, then he lays the drawing on the pumpkin and pierces through it with a knife, like a stencil. 'I use three shades of colour,' he says. 'The brightest section is where I've completely cut out the flesh, the slightly darker shade is where I've just removed the skin and left the flesh and the darkest bits are where I've left both the skin and flesh. It's an intricate process. Of all the faces here, Gordon Brown took the longest - he just has so many wrinkles!'
