lifter ticking problem :@
 

hey everyone, well i have this annoying loud ticking noise coming from my lifters when ever my engine is on and when i press the gas the noise speeds up and becomes louder, i was reading on a site where the guy just took the lifters out and cleaned them but he didnt specify how he did it and what he did after they lifters were clean and i was wondering if anyone out here has come across this problem and what they did to fix it ???

I'm assuming it just needs adjustment and if you want, you could just change the lifters too. Saves the hassle of cleaning and possibly solving the ticking problem too. Sometimes if you clean it, there might still be a good chance that it will tick again.

oh well to my understanding the lifters are hydraulic and therefore non-adjustable because i thought about adjusting but i found out it cant be done, any other solutions? do you think if i clean the oil return filter from the oil pan will solve this issue?

What car is it?

oh sorry i forgot to mention its a 1989 nissan 240sx.

What weight of oil are you using? Did you switch from Dino to Synth recently?

what did he exactly do just take em out and clean them? do you think if i clean the oil return filter from the oil pan might help because one mechanic told me that it was MAYBE not getting enough oil to the head and the car before me was parked for awhile...

Are you sure its a lifter and not your tensioner/guide?

Hydraulic lifters are not really serviceable. Sometimes they get sludge built up in them, aside from that tehy can collapse. generally requiring a replacement if its noisy.

yeup its lifter but now my timing chain is being weird and hitting againts the retainer any ideas why?

Bleed the lifters.
Take them out, turn them upside down and bleed them in clean new oil. They must be fully submerged.

For your timing chain guide, theres a couple writeups all over nico and stuff.
Pretty much, remove the valve cover and front cover. There's a few 10mm bolts holding the guide in. If the inside is scored, remove or adjust it. You don't need it, but it's there for a reason. The engine vibrations simply loosened the bolts and the retainers sagged. I would just remove them alltogether.
This is for the ka24de though. The kae is the same idea though. Just look for a writeup.
