new nVidia drivers screwed up my settings

Winxp x64
nVidia 7600 GT

everything is working fine until l4d2 told me I should update my drivers for my video card.

went into device manager, selected my video card and chose "update drivers" from there. I let it do it's thing and download and install whatever files it needed, then restarted the computer.

now the display settings is stuck in the lowest possible resolution. can't change it to regular (1280x1024) or any other resolution for that matter. can't even enable my secondary monitor ( when i click " identify ", it identifies both monitors as "1" (primary )

i've tried uninstalling the old drivers from control panel, restart, then install drivers again, and same issue again.

there's no nvidia control panel settings in the taskbar anymore as well so i'm not sure what's up with that, looked in the computer directory for the .exe to start it up manually but to no avail.

Now I've reverted back to the original xp drivers for the video card but obviously it's not performing to it's full potential without the new drivers.

any insights/suggestions, they're all welcome, I definitely need the help

Ummm why don't you go to the manufacturers website and download the drivers from them directly. That always seems to be the safest. If you're "automatically" downloading drivers then it's quite obvious they're the wrong drivers.

exactly, it probably messed up either with your OS or something else and gave you the wrong drivers. check the site and manually get the new drivers, if it did something like this there may not even be a new driver for XP 64

i did it from nvidia's as well.

did some more research, ended up updating the drivers to my plug and play monitors and resolved the issue.
