Windows 7 x64 Problems
 

This is a bit of a long shot, but I'm experiencing problems with my Windows 7 x64. I tried googling, but no results so I'm going to see if anyone on here has had this problem.

It works 2gb of ram fine, but when I put in 2x2gb ram, it freezes on the starting up splash screen. Each stick works fine individually and when i had windows xp (prior to 7) it read about 3.5 gb of ram.

I'm using a M2A-VM (revision 0804) motherboard with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ processor. The ram chips are OCZ 2gb each. I also have a Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT Video card if it makes a difference. I've gone onto the Asus site and downloaded the Phoenix update utility (meant for the windows 7 x64 and for the correct motherboard) but it doesn't seem to want to open saying that i should redownload the correct x32/x64 version.

Did anyone have a similar problem?

try bios update?

if u have problems opening programs right click and properties --> compatibility mode

make sure all your RAM timings are set to default in the BIOS
I remember the command rate (1T/2T) setting causing this problem on my old PC. you want 2T for a "safer" setting

This was the solution for me too (or rather the problem anyway). Though it would be weird if the settings got changed at some point when you installed Windows 7. I had some trouble a while back with RAM that wasn't running at the rated speed and for some reason when I set it manually (i think I just lowered the timings but might have upped the frequency as well) it would freeze at the splash screen and I would have to manually clear the cmos to get it to start again.

I figured out what was causing the problem of the 4gb of ram being unable to be read and freezing on start up. It was my video card and it's driver.

If I uninstall all my video card drivers and plug in 4gb of ram, it boots up. but the default video card driver will get installed after the reboot
The default video card driver with Windows 7 + my 4gb of ram freezes on start up.
My video card 8800GT along with it's latest driver 191.xx, 195.xx beta and even stable 190.xx combined with 4gb of ram causes a BSOD on start up. Forcing a loop until I unplug one of the sticks of ram.

Anyone have a solution for it? Or even an idea that I can attempt to try?

are you manually installing these drivers or just letting it do that automatically? seems like something I would e-mail the manufacturer of your video cars about.

Possible hardware issue?
I have also a 8800GT loaded with latest stable drivers on W7 64bit.
There are software out there to test the GPU.
You can try OCCT. It runs extensive tests on GPU, CPU, RAM, and PSU.

hmm really? what motherboard do you have and how much ram do you have in your computer?

p5k-e wifi/ap - asus.
also 4gb ram (2x2)
Under Event Viewer, I do get Nvidia errors. It is listed as critical. So I believe it is caused by a driver issue now that I think about it. But nothing as serious as BSOD or hangs upon startup. Don't quote me on that though.

I updated my 8800gt after it nuked playing borderlands, so I have the GTX260, and a new 700W OCZ PSU. But I'm still getting the same problem when I insert 4gb of ram, as opposed to 2gb of ram.

seems like a lot of people have this nvlddmkm.sys problem but usually when they play games. i've used driver sweeper and safe mode to completely clean the old files, and just installed newest nvidia driver, but still doesn't work.

^ and what happens if you remove that file? (just move it to another folder just in case)

what other hardware are you running? I just installed a system with W7 x64, i7 920, GTX260, and 3x2gb DDR3. i just used the nvidia drivers. no problems with borderlands or NFS so far.

@ underscore: i've tried using driver sweeper to remove it and i can't. i've read on the intertubes that removing all the files will make your computer unbootable because the screen will no longer work and it'll be a black screen with a mouse at boot. even in start. there are like 7 nvlddmkm.sys files associated with it, i'm guessing the newest driver installs like 7 older files along with it. [edit] but i DID try to delete or rename the files and i get an error not allowing me to do so, even with UAC turned off

@ dragonone: amd athlon x64 +5200 (old i know. upgrading to i7 in december); W7 x64, GTX 260, 2gb of OCZ DDR2 ram, 700w psu & m2a-vm mother board. Most people get the bsod attributed to the nvlddmkm.sys file during video playback or while gaming. i get mine during boot up and only if i put in 2x2gb ram

there are many solutions ranging from sliding your visual quality to reinstalling using the newest nvidia drivers. what errors did you encounter while using driver sweeper? did you try using it after you manually uninstalled it from the control panel via program features or device manager? have you tried this?

new problem though windows 7 x64 with 4gb of ram (3.25gb usable) why is that?

did u turn off ur onboard video or limit how much ur system allocates to it?

how do i do each of these?
