Gh0stRider | 11-11-2009 05:30 PM | SFU mourns passing of quarterback Bernd Dittrich BURNABY (NEWS1130) - A man found unconscious at SFU's swimming pool yesterday afternoon has passed away in hospital, and has been identified as SFU football player Bernd Dittrich. The 21 year old quarterback died this morning at Royal Columbian Hospital. While cause of death has yet to be officially determined, SFU head football coach Dave Johnson said he had learned at the hospital that Dittrich had a previously undetected heart condition.
Johnson says Dittrich was using swimming as a means of rehabilitating an injured shoulder that had kept him out of the last two games of last season. Burnaby RCMP are not treating the death as suspicious.
Dittrich, originally from Vienna, Austria, moved to Oklahoma at the age of 17 to play American high school football, then was recruited to play for Simon Fraser in 2007. In his first career start in 2008, he led The Clan to their first victory in over three years, a 24-10 win over UBC. Dittrich led the Clan to a 5-3 record and an appearance in the Canada West Hardy Cup final. A shoulder injury this season limited Dittrich to six games.
There is no word yet on funeral arrangements. http://www.news1130.com/images/2009/...ttrich_SFU.jpg
