where is a good place to get an engine swap done. looking to put in a b series into a 96 civic hatch

Akira has good sources from Japan if you don't already have an engine. We're redoing an engine build gone wrong by another shop in a customers boosted turbo Integra at the moment, but feel free to swing by the shop Mon-Fri (Sat by appointment) and meet Akira to see what he can do for you.

Pricing is very hard to determine, everything comes down to the cost of the engine. They're all over the board from 1000 to 2500 for B16a's. Labour could be as cheap as $500 to $3000+.

Only major issue with ordering from Japan is you can't personally inspect them before pickup which could be a recipe for disaster or you may luck out. We've personally never had issues, but can not guarantee 100% on used engines. You never know what is wrong with something until you take everything apart.

To get a firm quote I would recommend coming down to the shop with the car and let Akira or Phil to take a look at the car. There's too many factors for each individual car to quote it properly.

Best thing you can do before heading to a shop, is to educate yourself. Start reading into the swap you have in mind. Decide which motor you want (seems like you already know). See what issues others have had doing the swap, what luxuries you want to keep -or do away with- (things like a/c, and power steering) if you want those things, they'll usually cost extra. Keep in mind stuff like, you'll want to change the timing belt, water pump while the motor is out. Same with the clutch. Sure all these parts are going to cost more $$ ontop of the swap, but remember that the motor/trans will be out of the car, so it will cost next to nothing to install them. Plus, you'll have the piece of mind of knowing that those parts are good, and won't fail a day after the swap is finished. Like Cman333 said, it's somtimes impossible to know everything about the motor before hand, so why risk it? When I had the swap done on my car, I replaced everything that might be an issue, especially since the motor was out and sitting on the floor. Timing belt, water pump, every seal & hose on the motor, as well as a new flywheel and clutch. Overkill? I don't think so, but that's for you to decide. My engine was a JDM motor as well, and I've had zero issues thus far, and it's been 2 years. :) So don't let that scare you

Once you have a clear idea of the things you want, it will make life easier for you, and the shop. The shop will be able to give you a fairly accurate quote, and you'll know what to expect.

Just listing a motor and a chassis doesnt help me give you an accurate quote on a swap.
Its best if you were to come down to the shop for a brief inspection of your car to see what else may be needed to complete the job and a better understanding of your goals.
Keep in mind tho basic motor swaps start at about $3000 and can quickly exceed $6000 for some more advanced ones. We have a couple of Nissans and one Honda on the go right now that are all in excess of $10000 but those are very custom and fabrication intense and all have a common goal exceeding 300whp.
