most 1:24 arent that great.. good/ decent 1:18 are easier to get and are usually more detailed..

if you are limited by space, go for 1:24. i've seen some really nice 1:24 scale models, but the are of high quality and their price can easily exceed 1:18 scale range. there also seems to be many more choices in the 1:24 scale, depending on what you intend to collect. for example, there isn't much american stuff in the smaller scales. 1:18 is nice if you value working parts, like doors and suspension, as well as stuff like detailed interiors.

try not to go for the cheap stuff, but don't go spending more than a single car payment either. you may end up one day running out of space for your collection and stuck with models that you wished you never bought. i try to stay with the quality ones may even have collector value in the future (eg. UT models are highly sought after now, and anything that had a limited production run).

1/24 isnt very popular for die-cast, 1/43 have more chooices if space is limited for 1/18.

!Kodamu 11-18-2009 12:03 PM

1/43 would be the best scale to get into now. The prices for 1/18 have all jumped up.

you are correct... but again it depends on what you like to collect. for example, if you are into NASCAR, most of the stuff available is 1/24. but if you are into imports, not so much. but for example, ebbro has some nice stuff in 1/24 scale for example an nsx (discontinued):

does anyone think that the quality of materials being used are getting cheaper? i'm seeing more and more plastic where there used to be metal... pretty soon it won't be a diecast anymore but an assembled plastic model instead :o

NNT 11-19-2009 08:39 AM

The material being used isnt that bad, the thing I really hate is their (autoart) sealed models. but in another hang it's good that I dont need to start collecting JGTC models. (and I stop collecting WRC model because of that)

I need a gift for someone but does anyone know where to get a 08+ impreza/wrx/sti?

Da Xiong 11-26-2009 07:46 AM

Your posts prompted me to buy a 1/24 Fujimi model kit. I've never tried building before and don't know what I'm getting myself into...

Can someone please tell me what building tools and supplies (tweezers, glue, paint, etc) and where to buy them?

Thanks!

thumper 11-26-2009 07:53 AM

which model shop did you go to? because my first suggestion would be to ask the person behind the counter.

where are you located? for me, it would be burnaby hobbies.

Da Xiong 11-26-2009 11:53 AM

I bought it over EBay :)

You really need to go into a hobby shop and buy some supplies to get started.

A good selection of testors enamel paints - not only for the body of the car, but also for misc. things like interior, lights, rims, trim, etc etc. I suggest having:

-White
-Silver
-Gray
-Black
-Red
-Blue
-Yellow
- and Clear Coat.

As your basic colors that you always have on hand.. you can always mix them on a separate palette (never mix in the bottle or even in the caps) in order to get the color you need.

I also suggest a getting some enamel thinner, to thin out paints and to keep your brushes clean.

1 - super super thin brush (or a medium brush and cut off some of the bristles)
1 - medium brush
1 - fat soft brush

If you want to do really nice smooth paint finishes on large surfaces, I recommend an airbrush kit, although you can still get good results by brushing on the paint by hand, as long as the paint is thin and the brush has fine, not coarse, bristles.

You also need some coarse, medium, and fine sandpaper (to clean the attachment points where you break off the parts)

And also some liquid/paste polish. Once you've painted the part, you can apply the polish to make it shiny and deep/rich. This will keep it glossy.. otherwise the finishes often go matte.

Of course you will need a few sharp knives/razors, and tweezers.

The best glue to get is simply testors plastic cement - that kind that actually MELTS the plastic. (so be careful never use too much!)

I also have a small bowl that I put the decals in to soak, before applying them to the model. Q-tips & a tweezer are helpful for application.

Resist the temptation to twist or pull parts off the part tree. Cut them off!!!

Here are some from back in high school (I prefer the term 'introverted' in lieu of 'nerdy') :)

PS can u guess which ones are made from complete scratch balsa wood? :)

Vancouver240sx 11-27-2009 08:24 AM

Pretty impressive Rich!!! Makes my store bought collection look lazy. However, I feel it looks less "introverted" if you want to use that euphemism :P

rich

^i recommend getting a tamiya kit instead, fujimi kits' parts and pieces arent made that well.

well i cant say that for sure because thats just my opinion

Any store in Vancouver, Richmond or Burnaby will be fine :)

skyxx 11-30-2009 01:57 AM

Man, people are reselling the Z-Tunes for close to $300. I'm kicking myself for not getting them when they were out! :(

burnaby hobbies then. prices are average though, but it's one of those old-school shops that has been around for awhile, not one of those "here today, gone tomorrow" places...
