anybody working at a rec centre? how did you get in there and where can you find job openings

I wonder how teh skating instructors get their jobs. do you have do a course? i'm not talking about powerskating, but just teaching kids to go forwards, backwards and how to stop.

They are hired by Vancouver Park Board. Check the city website.

I've worked for 11yrs with Vancouver in Parks & Rec and started off as a skating instructor at Killarney. I still teach part-time and it's honestly the best job in the world.

We usually hire skating instructors in the summer, so look out for a job posting June-August. We obviously require you to be a proficient skater, taken skating lessons before (such as the learn to skate program you take when you're a kid), previous work experience with the public (in particular the 3-12 age group), creative ideas when it comes to teaching skills and coming up with games and #1 is having a fun and enthusiastic attitude. Any coaching certificates are an asset. We tend to hire people who will use this job to help them with their future career (aka teachers, recreation programmers etc). There is a skating test where we require you to demonstrate all the skills we teach in our program. Make sure to mention what type of skating experience you have on your resume. You wouldn't believe the number I get that don't mention a skating background.
