im pretty sure its ur PSU... does it make a clicking noise? does it show the bios screen?

something shorting out in ur psu and to save the computer its turning itself off. try a new one.

did you ground yourself before doing any of the mods? reset your cmos?

It might be working now, but you may very possibly start seeing the same symptoms again soon.

Like I said, I had a machine that had the exact same problem, and doing various things helped, but only for a little while. For example, even swapping the power cord made things better for awhile. How, I have no idea... but in the end, it was still the motherboard that was the problem.

I think we can definitively say that it was your PSU causing the problems. If it was a problem with the motherboard then swapping out the PSU shouldn't have fixed it. That being said it's likely the old PSU screwed up the video card and it's possible it might have caused problems in other components (the mobo, cpu, ram etc.).

I wouldn't recommend replacing your mobo on the off chance that it was the original cause of your problems.

Also does the "fried" video card work in your other computer? double check that it is in fact busted before replacing it but it looks like you'll have to pick up a new video card too.

no it does not work in the other computer, did the same thing as when it was in mine, just comes up with no display although the fan still works on it

tonight i installed the new 4870, so far so good i added 2 fans inside the case and with the new heatsink the temps should be much lower now

I inspected my MB throughly and i did not see any capacitors with signs of wear, exploding, etc. they all looked perfect

is there anything i can do to test the motherboard? also if the MB was the problem [although the PSU seems to have been the main culprit] do you guys think anything could potentially happen to my new video card?

i appreciate all your guys help very much, my computer looks totally different inside now and it's stepped up quite a bit performance wise :D

potentially, the whole thing could burst into flames and burn your house down. But it's not very likely. I think the PSU is the only thing with enough power to be able to really cook anything independantly, (although there's probably some way for a mobo to take out a video card). If you're really paranoid get a new mobo and CPU and have two machines (if you have any sort of use for 2)

It's possible to damage a video card by removing if when the mobo is in standby. The computer appears to be off but it's still powered up. I think everyone has done this at some time.

haha I wouldn't say everyone but I can see someone making that mistake. Before I even open the side panel on my computer I turn off the PSU manually and unplug the power cord. After opening I make sure the mobo light is off. I wouldn't touch any hardware unless I was standing on hardwood floors or wearing a static strap.

Sure is nice to play fallout 3 with no graphic lag :)
