Need opinions on a new TV

I've been researching for the last month and a half what I'll be getting around Christmas for a new big screen. It has to be LCD or Plasma, and it needs to be under $1500. Cheaper the better.

I use my TV now for watching SD cable, movies, and xbox 360 games from time to time. I've narrowed down a few choices to...

LCD's
Samsung LN42B610 (42" 6 series) or LN46B610 (46" 6 series)
I'm leaning towards the 42" so I can grab a nice receiver to go with it.

Plasma
Samsung PN50B540 (50" 5 series)
Panasonic TCP42G15 (I need to order tomorrow before 10 am from FS while the sale is still on)
Panasonic TCP42G10 OR TCP42S1 (G series vs S series)

Problem I'm running into is info overload as to what is good vs what I need. Obviously I need to go in store and see what they look like and what I like, but suggestions for a direction to go or pointing out a model I should look at would be appreciated. I've checked out the AVS forums and I've come back more confused than before.

And I know there's already another thread going for a new TV, but would like other ideas for my price point.

Just looking at your list there I'd pick the Samsung LN42B610, will be a great TV and allow you to get a receiver.

If you watch sports/play fast paced games, check the response times.

If you have any windows in the room/lots of lights, knock out plasma.

Measure the distance from where the TV will be to the couch, and see what size you should run for that distance.

If you don't have an HD receiver be sure to budget for that, no point having a great TV with a shit signal.

always buy the biggest tv u can afford.
if you have to buy a model cheaper receiver, who cares. the extra 4" on the tv from 42" to 46" will be much more worth it. you'll always wish for a bigger screen until you get to around 46-50". also depends how far you sit away. i probably only sit around 7ft from my 46" and i think its perfect.

1080p on a 42" is just borderline noticeable unless you're sitting like 5-6ft away from it.

if you dont have a PVR and not home during most of showtimes like myself, downloads are fine ..i dont have HD signal and i don't use my shit analog signal anymore.

HD signals are only worth it if you watch quite a bit of sports IMO..since the rest of the channels in canadian providers are lacking..

Downloads are fine too, but you are missing out if you are still downloading them in SD. Once you watch shows in HD, its hard to go back. And I'm not sure what you mean by lacking cause right now you can catch your favourite show in HD and they air 2-3 times a day. I find it great, its just costs $$$. I'm with underscore, if you are not watching it in HD you are missing out! At least download the 720p encodes at a minimum.

I'm currently in the market as well, with pretty much the same price point as the OP. Looking into the 610 or a plasma but wondering if Panasonic is the way to go. Kuro would be nice tho lol.

I was gonna start one too but decided against it haha. I guess with Christmas coming and big TVs getting cheaper a lot of people are in the market to upgrade.

Not to steal the OP's thread but a related question: How much better is the samsung 610 series vs the 550. I was looking at the 46" models and the only real difference on paper is the 120Hz (is it worth it?) and 80000:1 vs 70000:1 (probably not noticable). I just can't see why the 610 could be worth $400 more. Anyone have experience with these?

not too sure about 5 series

but if i remember correctly

5 series' panel is COMPLETELY different than 6 and 7 series panel

its an older design, lower end interface

not just spec difference, not that 60/120hrz BS

IMO if those of you that are in the market for a new tv, prices are hot right now

just shell out the extra coins and get the 6 series (minimum) dont bother with the 5 series unless you are really tight on budget

750 is the shit but as i stated, its gonna be out of stock for at least the next 3-4 weeks, AT LEAST

610 would be the ideal buy right now considering price dropped huge.

I had my eyes on 6 series since last year, and last year christmas it was still selling $3000, than on sale at $2500-2600

i think we should all just merge all the tv bs threads into one

i started one, and 2-3 other OP started similar threads

i got a feeling there will be more ppl starting same threads lol

I was in the same boat last year. But I ended up getting a smaller tv now i want a 50+ and the 6 series price drop caught my eye. When I first saw it last year i jizzed my pants

Thanks for all the replies. Seems to be a lot of LCD love. Just wondering if anyone has information on the Samsung PN50B540 plasma. I've searched online and can't find any reviews on it. Only BB seems to carry it and I just can't seem to find much beyond the manufacturer's info on it. Anyone know if it's a worthwhile set to look at? And also looking at the PN50B530 by Samsung as well. Thoughts?

I have a 6 series and definitely think it's the best bang for the dollar.

My close friend got the 7 series and it's pretty close to the 6 but the colours are richer/deeper.
