Recently Terminated; I Have a Question.

I got terminated for applying for other jobs while at work (stupid, yes I know) but am I entitled to some sort of severance under anything in employment legislation?

I was talking to a few friends and they told me that when you're terminated they should give you some notice otherwise they'd have to pay you for 2 more weeks..or something to that effect.

I didn't sign anything when I left. I'm going to phone the labor board but I'd thought I'd ask you guys first.

Does anyone have any input?

If you're fired, I believe you're entitled to the 2 weeks. But if you quit, I don't think you are.

hey man, thanks for the quick response. Anywhere in writing that I can reference this to? I want to pursue this if it applies to my situation.

I just found the following on http://www.labour.gov.bc.ca/esb/facshts/termination.htm which indicates that they can terminate me without notice and compensation if they're cause is justified..but I can't seem to find that list..

You can try looking here... at teh employment standards act:

just called the labour board and looks like I won't have a case as I signed a contract when I began my employment which listed among its stipulations that I couldn't be using my work computer for non-work things. oh well.

after reading the first post.... I was going to say sue their ass. they can't fire you because you are searching for another job.

then I read you were doing it using the company computer ..... what a dumb ass.

SkinnyPupp 11-24-2009 05:58 PM

LOL you were looking for a new job while AT WORK? Why not just go and ask to be fired? :lol

JesseBlue 11-30-2009 09:34 PM

maybe he's applying for a job internally...unless you're not...

if you are terminated with cause you are not entitle to anything. if the company terminated you without cause you are entitled to more than 2 weeks depending on a lot of factors. the 2 weeks notice is a general misconception.

It also depends on the company. Some companies have stipulation that you have to be on salary before they will give you severance for being fired/laid off.

Also, you're dumb for looking for work FROM work. GG.

how did your work place find out you were applying for jobs with the work computer? do they monitor traffic?

Mugen EvOlutioN 12-10-2009 12:44 PM

^ im curious too

the_rickster 12-10-2009 02:04 PM

any time you're using company resources for non company related purposes, you're exposing yourself to the possibility of termination. regardless of whether you signed a contract or not.

tiger_handheld 12-10-2009 03:09 PM

u deserve to be fired!

The IT dept. can easily track this by Remote Desktop, and other means.

Just about every company has the ability to monitor traffic but rarely is there someone watching, it's just a waste of time. The IT department basically confirms the boss's suspicions.

i would say 99.5& of all work force that has internet/computer access do something else other then WORK on the computer.

That being said, looking for work while @ work. = GG.

fishing666 12-21-2009 08:24 PM

yeah..if you aren't working at work, get fired
your money comes from somewhere.. either the labour by producing sellable products. or selling the product urself for the money.
