Sony AW series laptop

What do you guys think about the AW series laptop?

I need a desktop replacement so i can occassionally take it on the road.
It has 18.4 inch LCD and 4GB ram with T6600 intel core 2 duo cpu. It is HD ready with optional blu-ray player ($400 extra i think).

The price is $1099 (without blu-ray) which is cheap compared to some of the ultra portable Sony.

My Main usage: Watch online TV, internet surf, play simple games such as WC3 or WOW.

Should i buy it? or look for some other brand and model (suggest please), my budget is around 1200$ and would like as big of package as possible (big screen, big HD, fast processor, big RAM)

StylinRed 11-26-2009 07:57 PM

you could look at Lenovo, i priced them after i bought my Vaio and their prices are quite good

.... cant remember if they have a 18" model though..... i just bought the y550 for a xmas present from NCIX they had it for 600$

anyway about the AW i was actually checking it out when i ordered my new FW, 18" is just too big fer me but if its going to be a desktop replacement you should enjoy it...

my FW has replaced my desktop and the 16" screen is big enough fer me, I'd spring for the 1gb video card its supposed to be able to play games like ModernWarfare2 @ med.:
47.5fps and Crysis at the same

adding the blu-ray burner is a treat 25gb discs are $2 now which isnt bad but the 50gbs are still $7.50

how are u getting it @ $1100 though??? oO sonystyle.ca has it @ 1825 at least

oooo sonystyle.com is having their sale! $899

wasabisashimi 11-26-2009 08:17 PM

it's $1099 at sonystyle.ca,, (without Blu-ray), just checked today

Try looking at the 17" HP Probook. I was considering them as well as the Sony AW before I got my Macbook Pro.

You are never better off getting a Mac, for any price.

There are always people complaining about every brand. Personally I love my HP, 2 years old and it runs great, all I've had to do is clean the fan.

wasabisashimi 11-27-2009 11:13 AM

not looking for MAC, personally don't steve jobs or anything associated with his company. Plus at the price of $1099, you can't buy a MAC

underscore 11-27-2009 11:14 AM

You can, but it'll be used an absurdly overpriced. People have some delusional views about the resale value of those :lol

I had an HP 17" laptop for 3 years, and aside from the usual Windows issues, I never had a problem with it. It's still going strong, although the screen is visibly dimmer than it was new, but that's an inherent problem with CCFL lit screens.

That's not entirely true. I recently bought a 17" Macbook Pro because it was the best laptop I could find for my purposes in the $3000+ range. HP, Dell, Lenovo, Alienware, Gateway & Falcon Northwest 17" models spec'd out to the same or similar to a 17" Macbook Pro all came out more expensive, heavier, way less battery life and thicker than a 17" Macbook Pro. So, for me the power and portability combo of the Mac was the way to go. YMMV, of course, as everyone's needs are different. I agree though, that in the lower end of the laptop market, the Macs are not the most cost effective way to go

Hondaracer 11-28-2009 11:51 AM

stick with Sony, trust me you wont be disapointed

Sony's always seem to cost a little more for similar or even lesser components, but imo the quality is much higher

i will never buy anything but Sony notebooks.

my 2.5 year old Vaio with windows 7 runs better then the day i bought it, no joke

Well yes up in the $3000+ range things tend to level out, but not many people buy up there. Just curious did you look at Widow?

Yeah, Sony is good. They're built tough. I still have my old VAIO that came with Win98, a 500mHz Celeron CPU and a 12GB HB...it's been dropped, had a little coffee spilled on the keyboard, and it still works fine... a little slow, but still works!

No, I've never heard of Widow until now, and thanks for letting me know about them. They do look promising, but the 17" models with similar specs as a 17" MBP are more expensive, not to mention heavier and thicker. As a photographer, I need a screen that has the widest colour gamut I can buy, and Widow doesn't mention anything in their literature that I could find (in the few minutes I was browsing).

underscore 11-28-2009 01:32 PM

^ Ah good point, for you photo guys a large part of it does boil down to the screen. How fast it can process your stuff is pretty much irrelevant if the colours are way off. I haven't directly looked at a Widow in a while but I know they were the official gaming laptops of E3, they've had some pretty nuts hardware. I used to drool over Voodoo's laptops but their prices went way up and Widow looked to be better bang for the buck (not that I could ever afford any of those things :()

Speed is relevant too. If I have 700 shots from a wedding or fashion shoot, I want to get through those as quickly as possible, and the MBP is awesome in that regard....well, compared to my old HP 17". What used to take 11 seconds to render now takes 1~2 seconds with accurate colour! :)

wasabisashimi 12-04-2009 01:05 PM

got the Sony AW laptop, love the LCD size and color. Windows 7 boots very fast too

StylinRed 12-04-2009 01:39 PM

cool grats
