PS3 Blue Ray ? Can I plug in my external hard drive on PS3 USB input and watch Blue ray Movies that i downloaded off a torrent site or does the Blue ray file have to Be on a disc to watch it ? |
If you mean a 'blu ray file' as in a .MKV, your PS3 won't be able to play those right off the USB key. |

YES and NO.... yes if the file container is MP4 or AVI, no if the file container is MKV. There is one great workaround that is a much better solution... PS3 Media Server, this amazing freeware allows you to share a directory off of your PC or Mac and stream the content to your PS3 or crappy Xbox360. It will work with almost any file and will transcode on the fly if needed, that being said it works flawlessly with BLU-RAY rips downloaded from the net. I've watched 720p and 1080p MKV files with no problem. The odd time it won't play a file but there is a 2nd transcode option that the server creates. Also, make sure that your computer and PS3 are connected using Gigabit Ethernet and NOT wireless crap. If you go wireless expect delays playing music and video, also good luck fast forwarding or rewinding video content. Enjoy!!! |
^ I wish the PS3 didn't jump straight to 10x rewind, makes it tricky but still works. Also is there a way to allot more of the CPU/RAM to PS3MS? I can run everything flawless except for The Dark Knight, I have to stop every 10 minutes to let it buffer, and when I try to copy it to the PS3 is never stops and just keeps creating this huge file. |
i havent streamed that particular BDrip as i own the BD, give gigabit ethernet a shot and see if that helps. also check your cpu usage (on your computer in task manager) while streaming, its either a bandwidth issue, or your cpu cant keep up, or the file is too much for the decoders/encoders in the current PS3MS software package. copying files from the media server interface to your PS3 works great if the file is a type that the PS3 can natively play, if so the file will be the same size as the original. if the file is being transcoded (you will see "[MEncoder]" after the filename) then the PS3MS software is transcoding on the fly during play. when you copy the file it also transcodes and will take a long time, the end result it while eventually complete the copy but will produce a file on the PS3 HDD that is about 5x the size.... for example i had a 1gb MKV file on my mac that i copied to my PS3 thru the PS3MS interface and i took a while, in the end a copy was made on the PS3 and it was 5gb. during the copy my cpu usage was 111% (of 400%, im running a quad core xeon) which shows that the PS3MS software was busy transcoding on the fly while coping. most 1080p requires transcode. Thus that other 1% usually takes 1-3 hours to transcode one video. BUt yes, use mkv2vob. |
PS3MS transcodes on the fly so you dont have to wait or make duplicate files... plus there's no usb hard drive hanging off your PS3 cluttering your AV setup. I love having all of my digital content (videos, photos, music) easily accessible from my PS3 without using a usb hard drive, PS3MS FTW!!! |
