HP Mini 311-1033CA (VM264UA)

anyone using this?

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en...0-4041559.html

would like to hear real-life experiences with this one. i want to buy it as an xmas gift for someone that needs it for travel/light use.

What_the? 12-01-2009 04:45 PM

i just got this actually...

make sure to install flash 10.1 beta or you can't watch youtube HD

the touchpad is very finicky... very sensitive... install touchfreeze to help counter that...

it's a french canadian keyboard, so sometimes typing can be weird... i.e. the small left shift key, and the weird inverted enter key, etc...

if you can overcome these, it's a pretty good deal for a game-playable, hd watchable laptop... it's very thin too... and it doesn't come with a carrying case in the box fyi

ya i agree with the keyboard layout, its annoying, but apparently the hp mini has the biggest keyboard for netbooks.
too bad all notebook/netbooks sold within canada now consists of that gayed out canadian layout.

roastpuff 12-01-2009 07:53 PM

I liked it for travel/web-browsing, but it can't do squat for HD/multimedia experience without extra RAM. Decent netbook, great keyboard for size.

thumper 12-02-2009 06:54 AM

i've never seen or used a french canadian keyboard until now. i read so many complaints about this it worries me.

where did you guys buy yours, and for how much?

roastpuff 12-02-2009 07:53 AM

Costco, 6-cell version for $350. Was on sale, not anymore I think.

thumper 12-02-2009 08:21 AM

i'm looking at this:

http://www.costco.ca/Browse/Product....atchallpartial

the HP site says 11.6" screen, but the costco site says 10.1"?

and can you add more memory?

thumper 12-02-2009 08:29 AM

also wondering how this compares against a samsung N310 (besides being cheaper)?

not sure what roastpuff is talking about, but the ION gpu allows the hp 311 to play HD video and games...

the samsung n310 on the other hand (assuming it doesn't use the ION Gpu) can't do HD or multimedia...

I've watched youtube HD content using flashplayer 10.1 beta no problems... and i've played games on it too... counterstrike, and half-life 2 work on it no problems at high detail

the 311 goes for about $400 at NCIX or futureshop (both with xp)

and if you get for a gift I'd install flash 10.1 (for hd flash) and the complementary latest nvidia driver for it to work
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html

also media player classic home cinema which support DXVA (uses ion for hd video playback)
http://myhpmini.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=2331

oh & btw the xp version comes with ion "LE" the chip is the same as regular ion just need a slight modified driver to get dx10 if you install windows 7

I had the non-ION version, I must've confused this with the 110-1036, which is what I had.

besides the HP store I doubt you'll find the windows 7 version w/ 2gb/250gb hdd

Quebec uses QWERTY however every other francophone country uses AZERTY, so Quebec designed a bilingual keyboard, and its cheaper for companies to use one keyboard for all of Canada.

Just ebay a non billingual keyboard off ebay. That's what I did for my laptop.

i found it in stock at the burnaby costco warehouse. it is $499 with the standard 2 year extended costco warranty/support, and the only color choice is black. i don't really like the keyboard much... the return key just isn't where it supposed to be dammit. there are no sales anymore for it (i think someone mentioned that it had been before) but... it's an xmas gift so time is not an option.
