Video card dying?
 

Hey, one of my computer's screen is going nuts with red and green lines/patches.

Most likely the video card is screwed up right? I uninstalled and updated drivers. No dice. Changed the thermal compound. Although there was no sign of overheating. I just need confirmation that it's the video card.

Could be your monitor is dying.

change cables, maybe its carrying a bad signal

Hmm, the monitor seems fine as it's a LCD TV monitor. I switched it over to my dvd player/bluray player and there was no signs of that. I'll check the cable.

My friends laptop was like that, except the lines were vertical and it spread throughout the whole screen. His problem was his video card and I'm pretty sure yours is too. It wasn't drivers or anything it was just the actual video card.

Okay, did a minor test. I took my secondary monitor from my main computer and I hooked it up. Had the same thing going on that screen. I guess it is the Video card. I checked out the radeon 4670 by XFX. I just need one to get the screen from going wonky again, not really for gaming or anything :). The current video card is an All in wonder that I used as a tuner type of affair. Will give an update once I get the new video card in. Cheers!

Yup... vid card. Get it changed before it dies on you.

try installing the factory graphics drivers and see if that solves the problem

i had a similar problem on my laptop after i updated my drivers, my display went all wonky. turns out Nvidia's new drivers stopped supporting my particular video card (9650M GT) :(

if the problem persists, i would just take out the video card immediately and run on integrated graphics for the time being... theres no telling what kind of damage your video card is doing to your board and monitor

^ It had the problem before I updated my drivers. So I thought I'd update it to see if it works but same shit is going on. Will buy a videocard tomorrow. The Radeon 4670 cost like 70 bucks. :D Not bad.

try downgrading to the original driver that came with the retail CD.

If it's all cleaned and dust free and you've switched different monitors then it's definately a hardware failure.

take off the heatsink and put new paste in it and clean the dust!

If you are using nvidia card, download EVGA precision from evga website and you can monitor your card's temperature. Also allows you to increase/decrease your fan speed and overclock your card. Very helpful tool.

Back on topic, it looks like your card is producing artifacts, that is when you see lines of colors on your screen. This is due to overheating issues. Best clean and repaste your GPU.

My brother's GTX 260 was like that after a restart and BFG RMA'd for a GTX 285. If you're not a computer tech and don't want to fiddle with your card mechanically, you can send an email to BFG and they will most likely RMA your card. But the process will take weeks.

Did all those above (downgraded drivers, changed paste), I went and bought a new card today. I was in awe at how there was no power connector on the board! CRAZY. It's a XFX Radeon 4670, it's good enough for my secondary computer.

o snap! My laptop is doing the same thing!!! expect it happens like once every 3 to 4 weeks. It is usually fine after I restart the computer. The laptop is not overheating for sure since it is usually pretty cool. HMMMMMM is there any way to check. Laptop is out of warrnatly.

+1 on video card. overheating, or frequency set too high. either way, the card is on its way out.

There was an article somewhere where an owner baked his video card in the oven to fix the cracked solder joints. Worth a shot.

I'm no computer expert, but the fact that you were able to screencapture the error makes me suspect it's a software issue. If your card was indeed dying, your screenshot would've looked fine.

try taking a can of compressed air to the video card, maybe a crap load of dust is causing that garbled image.

Did everything like you guys said. Got compressed air to clean it, changed thermal paste. Uninstalled and updated new drivers. Uninstalled and did a roll back driver to an older driver. Monitor was fine, cable was fine. Temperatures were fine. I came to the conclusion that the video card crapped out so I went and bought a new one. Good as new!. I even went as far as testing the voltages and checking each output port.
