That depends on what you're looking for. Popular performance winters such as Dunlop 3Ds and Brigestone LMs drive like all seasons but provide more aggressive winter tread pattern, which is suitable for light snow/slush applications. Tires like Bridgestone WZs sacrifice road handling for traction on ice.

Toyo Snowprox s952's. Not cheap per-se, but they have some wicked deep snow grip (amazingly enough) while still providing great performance while driving at higher speeds. Don't think about ice driving with 'em, though... :lol

hankook icebear w300's for mild snowy conditions, hankook ipike's for nething else

Goodyear Nordic. Cost like 1/5 what everyone else charges, and seems to work fine.

Michelins are nice but I'd rather buy a TV with that extra coin.

Dude, no 19" Goodyear Nordics are available. :haha:

OP, get smaller wheels if you can, 19" snow tires are going to be pricey as hell.

^ dude, the smallest X5 tire is 18". They don't make 18 inch steelies. So just getting tires are cheaper for him.

TRDood 12-11-2009 12:06 AM

it's going to cost you a lot of money.

for that kind of money, you can buy a beater. LOL

So many freaking threads about snow tires you just have to make another one?

Geez sorry, I wasn't asking about what winter tires I got and pictures of snow conditions.. I wanted a personalized answer for my own car because I wasn't sure..
Thanks for the fail :(

Anyways, so far I've decided on looking for snow tires on the other car as it seems to be a cheaper option.. or a beater with winter tires. :D
Just realized I'm going to need a new set of rims with the snow tires if I was to get them on the x5 as they're 285 width.. FML

What's the rough cost for mounting the snow tires if I just bring them to a shop?

fliptuner 12-11-2009 07:19 PM

For your beater? What size? What car?

I don't know..? What's a good 4WD/AWD car that I can buy for cheap?

I'm looking for 215/60/16 snow tires for the other car..
Leaning towards the x ice 2 so far.

fliptuner 12-11-2009 09:00 PM

Define cheap in $$$ to you.

Almost any fwd car in good condition with snow tires will do fine. You can spend $1000 and go up from there. Depends on if looks count and what your budget is.

kitsune 12-11-2009 11:28 PM

As long as its presentable and works reliably its all good. I dont mind an older car as long as its been kept clean.
Cheaper the better of course..but for a winter beater.. Maybe 5k max? But ~2-3k would be ideal..

Where do you guys purchase your winter tires from? Any recommendations?
Oh, and looking for winter cables.. anyone know where I can find the scc z-575 or equivalent in vancouver?

Gawd.. Sorry im such a nooblet ~_~
