Part Time Studies at Kwantlen
 

So I've been thinking of going back to University but before I go into the program I'd like to apply for, I need to do a couple of upgrade courses. I figured I'll start from scratch (high school level since I've forgotten 95% of what I was taught in my various science 12 classes) for a semester before applying for the program at UBC.

I've tried talking to an advisor, first over the phone... but she was an absolute bitch and wouldn't explain anything to me. She then offered to set up an appointment for me... next available date? March. Sorry, can't wait that long. And unfortunately the drop-in date doesn't work for me because I work during that time and can't afford to take the time off without a guarantee that I'll talk to someone that day. If not, I'd have to take another day off the following week to try and talk to someone...

Anyway, I figured I'd try to work on it on my own, but I can't figure out a way to apply for specific courses without having to apply for a specific program first.

Is it even possible to do this?

what you can do is apply for a generic program like business or something. and take the classes u need as electives?

if u email advising- they are much nicer.

I managed to luck out. Called Kwantlen today at lunch on a whim and found out that there were a couple of cancelled appointments for tomorrow, so I snagged one of 'em. Woot!

The problem is that I can only do it part time during the evening as I need to maintain my current job while going to school until the fall time. I can't devote a bunch of time to courses I don't need.

what kind of courses do you need?

I'm looking to upgrade my Bio, Chem and Math to put it inline with UBC's requirements. I can get in as it is right now, but it's been so long since I've actually gone to school (well, for those particular courses) that I've essentially forgotten the majority of what I learned. Figured I'd go through 'em again as a refresher.

Like Bio 12/Chem 12/Math 12? Can't you just use your school district's continuing education program (e.g., SD43's are tuition free for residents) to take those courses? Saves a tonne of money.

If you are just planning to upgrade high school classes, just go to your local school district. For example, if you live in Vancouver, the VSB offers a number of classes that are either night classes or self-paced. You don't need to go to a college to get high school classes. After that, just apply directly to UBC to your intended program. Also, if you can get into UBC as of now, you can get admitted, but just take your electives first while you figure out where your math/sciences are at. Frankly, I don't think you will need to redo all your high school courses again. Maybe sitting in on a few lectures will start to ring bells, and most school offer some sort of academic-aid sort of thing (don't know what it's called), which is alternative to taking the entire high school course over again.
