Actually the reason why the West assumed there were weapons of mass destruction (bio/chem warfare) was because at some point, there were some in Saddam's possession. Why, you may ask? Because the CIA GAVE chemical weapons to Saddam when they were fighting Iran. Saddam then used the CIA chemical weapons to squash the Kurdish rebels in the North (Saddam and most people in the middle of Iraq were Sunni, and wanted to consolidate all power).

funny how in 20 years allies can turn on each other when there's an unbalance in power..history sure repeats itself.
