crazy

How could that thin piece of metal barrier went straight thru the firewall of the car? Or there isn't a firewall anymore since the engine is in the back? Still that area should be one of the toughest part of the car in order to protect the people inside....

Notice how the speedo is stuck...they weren't going that fast...

i think the speedo dropped significantly like 0.1 seconds into the crash and probably stopped there...

wait actually it reads about 90-100km/h so sounds about right... add 20-30km/h for impact speed n thats the result

hotong 12-16-2009 07:40 PM

shitty sucks to be the driver.

van_driver 12-16-2009 07:43 PM

I think it's higher than 110kph. I think the rev meter and speedometer dropped a lot before the computer system crashed. I'll guess somewhere around 160-180kph.

That thin piece of guardrail is thicker than any firewall you're going to see out there, and being formed the way it is is incredibly strong, remember, it's designed to keep cars and trucks from falling off the roadway. Firewalls aren't armour plating, just relatively thin sheet to keep heat and fumes out of the cabin, and to provide some torsional rigidity to the car.

A few years back, 2 Hongers had the same thing happen to their A4 (another Audi, how ironic) @ 57 + Heather, except it was the top "rail" of a chain-link fence, and it went through the crotch of the driver and the stomach of the guy directly behind him or was it the other way around. Took them 2h to cut them out. Imagine you're sitting there with a bar through you and your buddy like a skewer, waiting for the cops to show up, and one of you knows your bloodline just ended.

They showed pics of the bar entering through the grille and going out the rear bumper through the plastic. Must've been going pretty fast to be able to penetrate the engine area, firewall, both passengers, both seats, and rear bumper. Man I wish I cut out the pics.
