Camcorder knowledge??

I know this is the photog forum but some of you guys might have some knowledge I can take advantage of. I'm looking for a camcorder as a present. Looking to spend up to $1000. Now, does anyone have suggestions on what I should get? There are so many I don't know where to start. I've searched a few of the review sites but I don't know who to trust so if you could lead me to a reputable review site that would be stellar.

Also would it be worth it just to get a DSLR with video recording to sub for a camcorder?

Thanks in advance.

DSLR don't do sound.

Look into Cannons they seem to get really good reviews.

DSLR's do do sound. The Canon's do. Although their setup is a lot more than $1000

I find that it's worth the money and it's alot cheaper than one of the big guys. I run an HDR-HC1 and I find it's limits with not being able to change lens' etc etc. With a DSLR like the 7D and 5DMKII it makes that possible but at a cheaper price. Am I understandable? lol

Well you'll probably want to factor in a mount, some addons, external mic, etc. if you're serious at using a dslr to film. In addition to the lenses.
