help with steam and windows 7

This is kind of a longshot, but I've spent hours searching google and steam's forums.

I recently got a Asus G51-J the Corei7 laptop, and whenever I try to fire up steam it completely locks up my computer. I've isolated the problem to when steam client services tries to start up, but I can't figure out what the fix is.

I'm using windows 7 and I've tried everything from reducing user access control to shutting off my firewall, antivirus and every other non essential background process. I've done registry cleaning, updated all my drivers and tried out every single "fix" stated on various other tech forums and steam forums. So pretty much whenever steam tries to start up it locks up my computer.

I was wondering if anyone on here had any possible suggestions. When my laptop freezes its not one of those oh ctrl+alt+del end process it completely locks up everything and you have to hard shut down. Thanks in advance anyone.

Did you download the steam specifically for win7? When I upgraded my asus G50v A1 to win 7 the steam i had previously installed on vista didn't work, similare to the same issue with yours, So i had to search the windows 7 steam release.

I was under the impression that the steam client you get from the steam website is their latest version which has windows 7 support. I can't seem to find a seperate link that just has windows 7 steam support just lots of chatter about windows 7 RC and steam from months ago.

That's weird, I'm using a previous model G51vx-a1 along with windows 7, so far no problems with the steam client.

yeah I have no idea whats going wrong.. kinda frustrating especially since i'm going out of town in a few days and wanted to load up a few steam games to kill time while I'm away.

I just get the Steam client straight off the Steam site and it works under W7 Pro.
As for any game errors you may encounter in the future, update your video card drivers and get all the latest MS updates to avoid any crashes.
