DSLR NEWB! help!

Now that i have your attention.
tmrw is boxing day and im looking to take the plunge into a dslr camera. there are cameras on sale etc etc.
i have dont have a preference between Nikon or Canon. but those are the only 2 i will consider.
Price Range. 500-600$ Before Tax. I am a beginner. this is my FIRST DSLR so please do not suggest something thats thousands of dollars.
ive read around and i understand, buy a decent body and spend the money on glass...

I am leaning towards number 2 and 3.

Any other cameras i should be looking at? links? etc...
