hackers hacking into my wireless

some renters near my neighbours are hacking into my wireless,
i've gotten the MAC address that tries to connect.
I've changed my password a few times already.

Does anyone know where I could report this?

thanks

MAC address blocK/
or just buy a new router and hide the SSID

John 12-27-2009 05:53 PM

There are about 10 different things you can do to stop them, but reporting them is not one of them. The cops would laugh at you if you phoned in to report this.

To stop them try googling some thing like "wireless secure". Your ISP or router instructions will help you out as well. I believe the current Telus modems come with encryption enabled as mandatory.

I'd just rename and hide the SSID. If this guy's smart enough to break the passwords then there really isn't much you can do other than go wired. Everything is just a deterrent at best.

-Make sure to use high encryption, TKIP+AES if possible
-Use WPA2 authentication
-Set your MAC filter to ONLY allow certain ID's to connect. Make a list of all your devices, and add them to the list
-Hide your SSID

lilaznviper 12-27-2009 07:35 PM

also limit the number of ips that are dished out

Doing any 1 of those things makes your network very difficult to get on to, especially MAC address filtering. All 4 and I can't understand why anyone would bother trying. It would be near impossible.

Mr.HappySilp 12-28-2009 12:25 AM

MAC address filtering is your best bet.

willystyle 12-28-2009 12:49 AM

MAC address filtering is shit, if you can clone it.

Your best bet is to just do the other 3, other then MAC filter. I mean, if you want, you can, but it's fairly easy to bypass.

syee 12-28-2009 09:12 AM

You're not going to stop a determined hacker from getting on. All you can do is just make it more difficult so that 99% of the people you don't want stealing your wireless won't be able to.

Do what SkinnyPupp suggested. If that's not secure enough for you, then your best bet is just to unplug the wireless and run cable everywhere you need it.

i doubt it's hackers...just people nearby wanting to leech off some bandwidth.

in any case, make sure you use WPA2 not WEP which has poor encryption.

charge them 50% of your bill and give them the password

Actually, it's your worst bet. You just have to sniff the wireless packets in the area and you'll be able to see the MAC addresses in it, and then just change the MAC address of your own network adapter to match it, and you're in.

Anyways, if you just use at least a WPA password that is sufficiently long, I would be extremely surprised if they were able to crack it.

is there a program out there that you can use to monitor this?

ie. see how many computers using your wireless at any given time?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Most routers have a page where you can see all the connected clients. What wireless router do you use?

Wetordry 12-29-2009 02:20 PM

i have a linksys G-router

i tried navigating the router pages, but i cant seem to find anything

InvisibleSoul 12-29-2009 07:05 PM

It's in there somewhere.
