I think that was a result of the water flowing out of the hole he made. You can see that there are some parts that are still unfrozen (by the far trees) but it's obvious what is and isn't from the haze.

My guess is that he underestimated the thickness of the ice in the centre and thought it was just a thin sheet. Had it been thicker all the way to shore, it would've been easy for him to get caught under there, trying to find the hole to get out.

Either way, the guy's a moron.
