Actually according to law. You can beat the shit out of the other dude. Lets say he punched you 10 times. You can punch him ten times but harder and you won't be sued. But if you punched him 11 times he can sue you. :)

never just open your door wide open.
check the little eye hole thing or some doors have those bolts/chains that restrict the door from opening more than 10cm wide

Yea, that is why I felt like something was wrong, and took the necessary precautions. I even set up a webcam showing the door, and viewed it via netbook at the house we were having dinner at.
