GETTING FREE CABLE THROUGH THE INTERNET?

my friend told me about how he went to another friends house, and that guy doesn't have rogers cable or any tv/satelitlite subscription or anything. instead he watches tv right off the internet from a pc connected to his big lcd. he could select channels and watch live tv.

anyone know how to do this?

with the right equipment and some technical "know-how"
there is a way to receive satellite signals: You can do this legally (limited to free, un-ecrypted broadcasts) or illegally (stations which are encrypted).

However, most satellite companies have cracked down pretty hard against "illegal TV" and requires pirates to constantly update their encryption keys many times a day, which makes it require more effort than what most people are able to put up with. (I guess it depends how far people are willing to go to save a buck)

I wouldn't doubt the pirates have since come up with a more efficient way of doing things, but your best bet is to have your friend ask, as I doubt this topic can be discussed here

the internet is full of that info, google the key word free2air

i was interested in it for a time simply because the only shows i watch are out of date bought by Canadian broadcasters from the USA and rarely shown here, so the only way i can watch them is on American sat (in order to get it legally you have to have a social insurance number in the usa and a mailing address), i gave up and just decided to download the shows i wanted instead, i still pay for a big hdtv cable hook up but even then the shows i want to watch are not on the HD channles we get in canada, thus, its lame. (so technically i am paying for it sorta less the commercials but when using my pvr i can skip passed them any way so i guess everything is balanced technically)
WHICH if your friend's friend is doing hey may simply be watching downloads off his pc and or streaming video from his pc to the tv via ps3 or xbox or something.

This is my understanding of it:

Theres a grey box on the side of your house with a cable feed coming in from the street. The "filter" that filters cable out of your internet only subscription is a gold cylindrical filter in the box that the cable company shows up to remove.

If you were to remove it......

It might be a Slingbox.

that only works if the house was wired up by shaw cable, they put that filter there to "filter" out the channels. this only works IF the house still receives analog signals AND only works up to channels 5X i believe, anything above those numbers r digital feed and is all controlled over at the shaw end.

couple options, most likely of which is that he pays to get shows streamed to his house via his internet connection. anything you get for free will have pretty shitty quality in my experience.

I'm with tiger_handheld tho why not ask the freaking guy who has it rather than come on here guessing?
