Drill bit for steel door Hey all. Am doing a bit of extra security around the house and I have this need to drill a few holes into a steel door. The bit size needed is 3/36 and my standard titanium bits can't cut it. Where do I go to get a bit to do this? Cdn tire ? Home depot? Posted via RS Mobile |
bit's too dull or you're going too fast through metal. Drilling through metal requires a slower speed. Cutting oil helps. Titanium bits should be able to do the job, but if they aren't, it's most likely because you are drilling too fast (high speed). If you are going to go buy new bit(s), go with cobalt bits. At least with those, you can sharpen them when they get dull. Just drill at a lower speed and use oil so you don't destroy your new bits. Home Depot over CT. Tool places like Summit Tools, KMS or even Lee Valley. BTW, 3/36? |
Yeah, you are most likely drilling too fast if your bits are HSS bits. After you center punch the surface of the steel, drill as slow as possible AND don't lean into it. |
Patience is the key. It's like giving your g/f her first anal. Easy does it........ LOL. |

get some drilling / taping oil. although wd40 etc would probably work fine. keeps the bit from over heating. it's probably 3/32 s... |
thanks.. combo of patience and a slower speed with the titanium bits.. was not a problem at all. |
it's probably taken me 15 mins before to drill some holes. 1/4" bit through 3/4" steel. and with crapy bits. just keep adding fluid and keep going. Alum is so much nicer to drill! |

Didn't know about the slow speed and not leaning into it. Thanks for the info guys! |
go slow, and get some titanium drill bits  |

With everything else suggested, also try going with a smaller bit first, then expanding from there. Like it's been said, just like anal. Stretch it out a bit at a time. |
