It's really amazing with all the convention halls full of vendors advertising/selling their products & services that are geared towards wedding/portrait photographers. Canon, Nikon & Sony have HUGE booths showcasing pretty much their entire line-up of camera bodies and lenses. I got to play with and shoot with the new Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS II, and it's fucking amazing. The AF is an order of magnitude faster than the v1.0, more accurate and sharp as hell. I always thought the 5DmkII just had slow AF, but in this case, its definitely the lens, not the body. I have a meeting with the Canon people tomorrow, so I'll be able to do a more thorough test.

Any updates on the MSRP? Is it closer to the Mk1 or will it really be priced in the 2700-3000 range?

No word yet, but probably around $2400~$2500.

The Canon USA people said that it will be shipping next week to dealers in the USA. No word for Canada yet. I got to try it again today...I'm not sure if the optical quality has changed by a huge margin, but it is much faster. That alone is worth the extra $500 to me.

By faster AF do you mean faster than other USM lenses in acquiring focus in general? Or more specifically faster focus in low light conditions?

I'm not quite sure if (for me at least) the $500 (plus any clearance pricing for the Mk1) premium is worth it for faster AF only.

Faster...everything and improved IS. If you're a pro who shoots sports, or a lot of low light situations like weddings, it's worth the $500. For the regular consumer, probably not.

dunno the accuracy of this one since it does say canonrumors.com
it shows a store with a 70-200 f2.8L IS II with a friggin huge box for a 70-200
http://www.canonrumors.com/2010/03/7...ii-in-toronto/

You can buy it in HK already. Someone on POTN already has a copy. They even mentioned the AF is a lot faster.

Canon's own charts that graph out the IQ show only a minimal improvement in IQ. It seems that the AF and IS systems that got a really big overhaul.

My 70-200 is in front, the new V2.0 is behind. They look pretty much identical.

Canon Japan has announced a shortage of its recently released EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II USM lens because of higher than expected demand. The company says it is attempting to boost supply to meet demand across all markets.
Canon must be happy...

$2699.99 at Broadway

is there a general time frame for when new lenses will drop in price? for example after 6 months, or 1 year, etc?

Canon Professional Services. You get discounted prices that are less than wholesale if you are a professional photographer shooting Canon gear. You first need to prove to Canon that you earn 100% of your income through photographic services, and for now have at least 2 pro bodies and 3 L lenses. They are making it more strict this year to weed out the ones that don't deserve a CPS membership.

This lens looks to be very good!

I support that CPS memberships should be limited to people who are actual photographers, and earn their full income through photography. It would be nice though if they had another membership for Canon enthusiasts to benefit from services similar to CPS. Like expedited sensor cleaning, discounts and freebies.

No such thing exists right?
