Why? The Canon 70-200 is the oldest of the big three's 70-200 f2.8 lenses. It was overdue for an update.

No North American pricing confirmed, but in the UK, 2700 Pounds(!). Estimated price is $2800 USD, according to my source, but again, not confirmed.

Does that mean we'll be seeing the Mark I go down in price?

Do you mean prior to the release of the new lens in April? Possibly, but I'm not sure yet.

Seeing as a used non IS 70-200 f2.8 goes for $1200USD, $2800USD is extremely steep!

it seemed fine on digital when I had one.

The nikons suffered from vignetting and soft corners. thats why they were replaced.

The current one is a bit soft...you've never used a Sony 70-200 f2.8G have you? That thing is amazing.

The Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR on FF is a bit soft in the corners, the older 80-200 is sharper, but isn't as in the AF department.

I acutally like the vignetting on the VR1, works well for me for sports/portraits. I don't shoot landscape so corner performance ain't an issue.

These new lenses are so damn expensive that I don't think it's worth the money to upgrade... yet.

Mint Nikon 70-200 VR1~ $1500 CDN
New Nikon 70-200 VR2~ $2700 tax in

Mint Canon 70-200 IS~ $1600 CDN
New Canon 70-200 IS~ $3000 tax in

Do you get 2x the performance? Hmmmmm doubt it. I guess for working pros this is no big deal but for the rest of us these new lenses are... damn too expensive.

It seems that with lenses, incremental improvements come at a steep price. I think it's worth the improvement. It may keep some amateurs from buying the lenses for sure. Pros can just write it off, but it's pretty much the price of one day's wedding shoot though.

I'm quite happy with my 70-200 2.8 all though its not the IS version, so i'm good. Here is a site with a few sample pictures, not very many though.

The current 70-200 f2.8L IS USM lists for $1999. When the 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM was introduced back in 2001, its suggested list price was about $3000. If the estimate for the MK II is about $2800, it doesn't seem too wild.

probably has something to do with the amount of asphirical lenses/ed elements.

That price is ridiculous. The only people I can see needing this are those that shoot sports out in the rain or whoever uses their equipment in harsh conditions.

My 70-200 2.8 is my favorite lens :P. lol. If I had disposable income I'd have all their lenses, haha. Damnit...lens lust .

So I'm here in Las Vegas attending the WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) Trade Show. It's really amazing with all the convention halls full of vendors advertising/selling their products & services that are geared towards wedding/portrait photographers. Canon, Nikon & Sony have HUGE booths showcasing pretty much their entire line-up of camera bodies and lenses. I got to play with and shoot with the new Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS II, and it's fucking amazing. The AF is an order of magnitude faster than the v1.0, more accurate and sharp as hell. I always thought the 5DmkII just had slow AF, but in this case, its definitely the lens, not the body. I have a meeting with the Canon people tomorrow, so I'll be able to do a more thorough test.
