what was the loud siren sounds?

warn / scare off whales from the whaling vessel?

Jingwu3 01-06-2010 04:47 PM

I think the siren is to warn the newzealanders that they are too close and f*** off.

SolidPenguin 01-06-2010 05:00 PM

Those sirens are collision warnings.

Doesnt it seem like what Sea Shepard does is almost terrorism? How can anything they do be legal.

Jingwu3 01-06-2010 06:03 PM

it is ilegal. The Japanese warned if they kept on acting like fools the Japanese navy will come along these ships.

It's international waters and whaling for meat is illegal.

Indeed, yet this is hardly justification for potentially killing or injuring the human beings aboard the vessel.

I still fail to understand the justification these people try to make when they throw firebombs, acid, and try to permanently cause optical damage to human beings in defence of human laws and morality in re: animals.

It is illegal only for the countries that signed the law, ie: the common law states and the US. The Japanese never agreed to stop whale hunting, thus I dont really think they need to fold to this law.

Japan

Japanese narrative screen showing a whale hunt off Wakayama.

When the commercial whaling moratorium was introduced by the IWC in 1982, Japan lodged an official objection. However, in response to US threats to cut Japan's fishing quota in US territorial waters under the terms of the Packwood-Magnuson Amendment, Japan withdrew its objection in 1987. However, according to the BBC, America went back on this promise, effectively destroying the deal.[14] Since Japan could not resume commercial whaling, it began whaling on a scientific-research basis. Australia, Greenpeace, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and other groups dispute the Japanese claim of research "as a disguise for commercial whaling, which is banned."[15][16]

Doesn't matter. The western power pretty much forced the Japanese to stop hunting whales, which is a regular stable in Japan back then.

Think about it. If today India tells Canada to stop eating beef or they will stop all their grain export to canada, how will canada respond. (ox is a scared animal in hindu culture)

what other people eat is really none of our business. Sea Shepherd are just a bunch of terrorists.

J____ 01-06-2010 07:28 PM

that siren is a non lethal weapon. The directional sounds is channeled like a laser bean to the target and the noise will drop you to your feet and cause disorientation. It looks like a mini sattelight dish.

Thats so stupid. the fukin hippie treehuggers boat went in the way of the japanese, not like the japs purposely ran them over. its much quicker for them to steer away the tiny boat than the big one. The captain of the big one can't even see the small boat cuz its so close. Fuking tools, get a life.

SkinnyPupp 01-06-2010 08:23 PM

So did they die? I hope so

Eclypz 01-06-2010 08:24 PM

Maybe Shonan Maru 2 rammed them on purpose...maybe not....hard to tell. In one of the videos (2nd one?) you can see the waters are really choppy. So they could have steered towards them, or maybe a wave took them...who knows, but if I were to guess, i'd say it's a wave, because I don't think such a large vessel can be that agile (but then again, I've never been on a whaling ship).

But I think that's besides the point, because the Ady Gil should have never been that close to a such a huge vessel in the first place - The Ady Gil was playing with fire and got burned....It was a reckless act.
When you're so close to such a large vessel, it's easy for the driver to lose sight of you. I drove a houseboat once, and I couldn't see anything closer than 10-20ft of the boat.

If they want to protest whaling, all the power to them, but they need to do it in a safe manner.

Hondaracer 01-06-2010 08:29 PM

from what i've heard the whaling is only for research anyways, fucking hippies got too much time, and by the looks of that boat, too much money on their hands

if i was running a crooked Japanese whaling ship i'd just pack RPG's and shoot that shit out of the water so no ones gonna find em

There not "hippies". Or at least disguised as them.

Anyone ever notice how Bob Barker would tease the contestants during his final years? Or is it just me?

what u heard was exactaly what the "scientists" wanted the public to think, that they are really "whaling" for research. but in reality, they're hunting the whales and selling them on the market so they can be turned into sashimi. why else is the nishin maru a floating plant?

So, just out of curiosity, why not eat whale meat?

says who, if it is international waters, who governs it? You think because you live in a country that declares it illegal, every other country must follow suit ?

Fortunately, this is not the case.

slammer111 01-06-2010 11:01 PM

Hippies deserved it. Yeah, let's go heckle a whaling ship because it makes us feel good. The video shows proof of them using the laser. I'll bet half the team aren't even vegan.

With that said, what a waste of a sweet-looking boat.

The difference is that the whales are NOT in Japanese waters.

Collision was stupid though.

I'm not aware of any firebombs? They throw stink bombs and slippery stuff (not sure if they still throw that). The "acid" just smells foul and taints the decks.

PS: The "acid" just smells horrid, it's to taint the deck. There are no firebombs.

even so, what the SS is doing is not an acceptable practice, anywhere.

by your arguement, next time an aussie plane lands in Japan, the Japanese can laser them, throw stink bombs at them, better yet ram some trucks into the aussies just coz they feel like it?

Ferra 01-07-2010 06:51 AM

lol...why is that most of you have issue with people hunting shark but are okay with people hunting whales???

Whales are just as important as sharks in our eco system.

The laws also forbid anyone from hunting whales for food...yet the japanese go around the laws by "claiming" their hunt is for scientific purpose which is obviously not true.
The laws are put in place in order to prevent people from over hunting whales and damaging the ocean ecological system, which is exactly what is being done right now.

I generally dont' support hippies and protesters, but I think in this case they are there for the right causes.

Well, maybe we should all dump our shits and garbage in the international water then? it will save us a lot of money in processing waste and landfills.
Who cares if we screw up the international water, right? it is not our country, let's just turn it into a shithole for our convenience
