Does anyone know any schools that teach adults Mandarin besides Continuing Education? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

You can take official credited courses at universities and colleges.

Have u heard of Yao's Mandarin School? They charge quite a bit....was wondering if it was better than taking it at a college? Also, I don't need the credits because I already have my degree...I just wanted to take up other language..

i'm up to 7 now, but going to be rusty cuz i haven't taken mandarin last semester

What's the price difference between Langara and UBC if ther eis one?
I'm looking to improve my Mandarin as well.

So do u think it's worth taking it @ Langara? Is it worth the money that ur paying? I'm gonna sign up for level 2..haha..although, my pronunciation sucks. We'll see what the teacher says...

Langara is $169 for 10 classes...whereas, UBC charges $295 for 10 classes...

Thanks, sounds like an easy call for me. Just gotta see if it fits my schedule.

Also, how would I know which level I should register for? Do they allow you to sit through a class to gauge what level you're at?

register for a level you think you fit in, then go to first class and see if the material they are going to cover is right for you

I'm in the same situation.

I want learn some basic mandarin over this summer. I will probably continue to learn mandarin next summer. I have absolutely no knowledge in mandarin. Also, I don't know how to read nor write any Chinese. However I'm a quick learner.

(Note: I don't want to be in a class with LBs and LGs)

Where is a good place to start? I've thought of ubc, but it seems like it's a little pricey compared to Langara. Are there other options that are affordable?

More specifically, where is the best place for beginners to learn mandarin? Price is also a factor.

I'd prefer to learn at a fast paste since I'm a quick learner and I will study my ass off.

Classes are very interactive and you spend 1 hour with a different instructor to practice your speaking every week. Qu Laoshi is really friendly and helpful too. As long as you listen in class, you'll learn quickly.

how is the marking scheme?
I'd prefer something with lots of class marks and mini projects and not so much on the final and the midterm(s).

Dug out my syllabus- Here's the marking scheme on it:

Attendance, Preparation and Participation: 10%
-This is basically for being in class, being able to read and answer his questions, follow the story, etc.

Conversation Lab: 10%
-This is a 1 hour conversation lab before the class where you practice words and grammar you learned from the last class.

Lesson Quizzes and Presentation: 20%
- A quiz every 2 or 3 lesson. For the presentation you basically have to make a 5 minute story with lots of conversation with the words you learned from whole class.

Midterm Exam: 25%

Oral Test: 10%
- Conversation teacher basically asks you 10 questions in Mandarin in which you have to also answer in Mandarin.

Final Written Exam: 25%

He also assigns homework for every chapter you finish consisting of grammar exercises and writing exercises.

wow.. not bad.. this marking scheme would really push me to keep up with the work and actually learn it or fall behind and waste money.

hm.. btw, I know this question differs for everyone, but how much did you actually get out of that course?

With that said, although my pronunciation is still off- I can now at least speak and converse using simple mandarin. Even for my classmates who come from different backgrounds (Korean, Japanese, Filipino, Caucasian) - You can tell that at the end of the class, they're gotten quite comfortable with speaking Mandarin. I think the most important part of learning any language is being able to practice it w/o people laughing at you. If you're in an environment like that, you'll undoubtedly learn.

That place is wayyy too far.. preferable a school in East Van area.
