| Future Shop vs. Costco
I bought a TV from Costco last month for $2000 +taxes
-90 day return policy
-extended the manufacturers warranty to 2 years
The same TV just went on sale at Future Shop $1800+taxes
-30 day return
-1 year manufacturers warranty
-includes delivery
***I don't believe in buying FS extended warranty and it's waaay to expensive given the cost of the TV ($400/3yr)
If I return the TV to Costco (which I hear is hassle free) and buy the one from FS, I would save about $230 but would lose that extra year of warranty.
I don't particularly like buying big dollar stuff from FS because their customer service is crap from my experience. Costco is the complete opposite.
The TV is already mounted and works fine and what not. Taking it down and returning it is not a biggie either.
Should I return it and buy the FS one or stick with what I have?
***Oh BTW I'd be buying it with an RBC Avion Visa with the extended warranty feature. Has anyone ever had to use this? How much hassle was it? Does it include accidental damage (ie: during a move or Wii remote fail...lol)?
Thanks a lot.

Oh another thing I found out. Costco doesn't price match - they say it's because they're a wholesaler.
I just don't really like dealing with FS. That's my real dilema.

Is the hassle of taking down the tv, repacking it, bringing it back to Costco, going to Future Shop, telling half a dozen associates "no" to the PSP, and setting the tv back up worth the extra $230 in savings?
Edit: And remember you'd lose that extra year of warranty. That extra money you spent at Costco may end up coming in handy. You never know.

ask costco nicely to pricematch and that if they don't accomodate to a customer's reasonable wishes you'll be returning it.
they'll most likely do it...im sure they rather take a $230 "loss" than an opened-box item that probably has to be slashed down by $400 for anyone to be interested.
GL & let Costco have your business. I'm with ya on the FS being jerks

You never know. | Another great thing about Costco - I just bring it back as is. If I were to return it, it's just a matter of undoing 4 bolts to the back, wrapping it in a blanket and taking it in - really no hassel. On the FS end, I would just go in, set the delivery date and pay. $230 is like an 8 hour shift so, moneywise, it's worth it.
I guess what it comes down to is $$$ vs. quality service/warranty.
twitchzero, have you (or anyone else here) done this? It makes total sense and I do have the FS flyer on hand.

Just FYI costco does not accept visa/mc, only american express.
Usually when it comes to electronics i go to costco. twitchyzero brought up a very good point which i will try on the next big ticket item i buy at costco.

i have applied that mentality at FS/BB but not costco..but it was an item ~$300...not $2000
if that fails and you want to be assertive about getting the pricematch say you'll discontinue your membership if they don't honour it, lol.

I'll be going there (Costco) tomorrow to see how far I can push it and let you guys know.
The weird thing is, I read about people, on here, buying all this stuff from FS, BB, Visions etc.. Is everyone buying extended warranties or just risking that things will go wrong within the first year?

I wouldn't buy warranty on tv.
As returning to costco is hassle free I'd do it. Buy something for 230 along with the tv. Or go casino. Posted via RS Mobile |

GL & let Costco have your business. I'm with ya on the FS being jerks | They don't price match. They don't really care if you return it because they just turn around and send it back to the manufacturer. Also costco sometimes has special packaging designed for costco. If you want to save that $230 and lose the extra year by all means just take the tv back to costco and buy the one from FS.

Dealing with FS for warranty alone in itself is a nightmare. I would just stick with Costco. The opportunity cost dealing with FS in itself is worth more than $230 in the initial cost savings.

I'd say the extra $230 is worth it just to avoid giving Future Sleaze my money. They're lying thieving pricks and I'll never buy anything from them again, not even a blank CD.

twitchzero, have you (or anyone else here) done this? It makes total sense and I do have the FS flyer on hand. | How many hours would it take you to undo 4 bolts, wrap it with a blanket, load it onto your car, drive to costco, wait in line, return the stuff, then drive to futureshop, and wait x days for the TV to arrive?
by keeping it, you are out $230,
but returning, you save 230, but you lose minimum 2 hours, plus gas, plus x days of not being able to watch TV, and lose 1 year of warrenty.
dude, the math is pretty clear to me..

Dont return it.
If you have the executive card at costco you already saved your self 2% on the tv

i'd rather pay the extra bit & stay w/ costco. they're much better to deal with. and if the price drops at costco within the 90 days you bought it, you can bring in the receipt for a price match. my uncle did it twice there b/c the TV dropped in price @ costco twice within that timeframe. though the 2nd time he had to talk to a manager b/c they said he can only do it once.

I'd stay with Costco on this, like what people said, dealing with FS especially for warranty stuff will be a big PITA and if you still have time in your 90 days you can wait to return it to see if it does go lower either at Costco or FS/BB/Visions ...

Just bought a TV at costco today. The 90 return policy and 3 year warranty is definitely worth paying a bit more (even though Costco was cheaper in my case).
If the TV is cheaper at FS right now there is a good chance it will drop in price at Costco in the next 90 days so you can go in and get the difference from there.

Just keep the one from Costco. The price difference isn't huge compared to the hassle of having to deal with FS if you need to use the warranty. I've also heard some credit card warranties are a hassle to deal with.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I called FS like I bought the TV 45 days ago and said I had a problem, just to see what kind of help I would get. It was total BS, the run around I got.
I also went to Costco and implied I would return the unit if they couldn't price match. Went all the way to the CS manager and she genuinely couldn't do it. She even said she would be more than happy to take it back if something better came along or the price dropped anywhere close to my 90 days.
$230 to me = 1 Canucks game, a decent night of drinking, a moderate loss at the casino.
All things considered, I'm keeping what I have, knowing I'll be taken care of. The fact is, in the coming months, the cost of this TV is going to continue to drop. I got good value for my dollar when I bought it at $2000 and I have to be satisfied with that.
