This new focus looks 100% better than the ugly ass smiley face Mazda 3's...

Looks decent, aside from the two verticle lines in the front bumper giving it triangular grills. Lancer hatchback tails?

Ford = Dual Clutch 6 speed.. I take DCT over CVT if I have to pick.

What Mazda has CVT?

godwin 01-11-2010 07:09 PM

Starting with Mazda 2.

Honestly FWD manuals are never very good.. the only manuals I would consider are longitudinal ones.

To those who think Mazda > Ford, what do you think of the Mazdaspeed cars?

Cuz' the engines in those cars wouldn't exist without technology provided by Ford as Mazda doesn't have the technology to make such an engine.

A lot of Mazda products wouldn't exist if it weren't for Ford lending them expertise and technology to allow their construction. To me that makes Ford > Mazda since they clearly have better technology than Mazda.

It's the other way around, Mazda provided engine technology TO Ford.
For example: The duratec is an adaptation of the Mazda MZR motor.

I'd say without Mazda being involved with Ford for the past so many years, Ford wouldn't have been able to up their game to where it is today.

^ The Direct Injection used in Mazda is Ford tehcnology - Mazda doesn't have DI tech. Neither does Toyota who licensed it from Ford in a technology transfer where they got hybrid tech from Toyota.

Duratec came out first on the MK1 Ford Mondeo/Contour in late 1994/early 1995.. MZR-series engine didn't come out until the introduction of the Mazda 6

too_slow 01-12-2010 08:15 AM

^Which was in 2001/2002

Ok fine, I meant the Current Duratecs. They are completely different than the old Duratecs.

"Beginning in 2004, Ford dropped the old 4-cylinder Zetec engines in favor of Mazda's MZR design. Thus, 2005 and present Duratec 4-cylinder engines are Mazdas"

"The Zetec was superseded by the Duratec series of engines, originally called RoFlow Zetec. These are based on the Mazda MZR engines.

"The Duratec 23 is a 2.3 L (140 CID; 2261 cc)[2] variant of the Mazda MZR 2.3 L engine."

Just to clarify, Ford and Toyota did not do a technology swap. What actually happened was that they were both developing similar systems at the same time, except Toyota patented their hybrid tech first, and Ford already had the patent on the Diesel systems. They simply agreed not to embark on patent infringement lawsuits against each other, but they did not actually share their systems with each other. Ford's current hybrid tech is it's own, as is Toyota's diesel tech.

That does look great. While I generally would not purchase a car from the North American big three this looks promising. It reminds me of the former Focus SVT, which I think was a great car.

Rich Sandor 01-12-2010 10:31 AM

What difference does it make who designed the power train as long as it's good??? And all the in-house developed powertrains in the current Fords (and Mazdas and Volvos) are awesome.

Look at the Ram for example. Everyone loves a Ram with a Cummins engine. Guess what, the best part of that truck is NOT made by Dodge, it's made by Cummins.

What is the #1 complaint about 2008-2010 Ford F350's? That the diesel burns too much fuel. Guess what, the diesel is actually made by Navistar, not Ford.

But in the end, no one cares who makes the motor. If the Navistar motor is bad, it makes the whole Ford F350 look bad. And if the motor is good, it makes the whole car look good, even if it's made by a totally different brand. People want the car to LOOK good and PERFORM good and be RELIABLE. They don't care about where it's made or any of that stuff. Very few people I talk to mention the cross-breeding between mazda and ford, even fewer actually understand the benefits of it.

Sometimes I talk to people who are enthusiastic about buying an Edge, MKX, Flex, or MKT because it's actually made in Canada, but even that is pretty rare.

Though I would've liked the gauge and instrument lighting in red or bright amber though, blue doesn't do it for me. Ergonomics look fairly cozy, and functional.

If it's like the Focus I rented last year, it can be changed with a push of a button :D
