BCIT Business Program

Just want to know if any fellow revscene members have taken the real estate/ marketing program at BCIT. I think the grade to get in is a C+ but let me know if I'm wrong. How did you guys like and Just any other experiences with the program or real estate progrms in general. Thanks

I'm in the marketing program right now in the 2nd term of first year. so far its pretty easy... well compared to when I was at SFU anyways. first year is pretty general you get the business foudnation and then second year you do all the fun stuff apparently.

The work isn't hard, you just need to work hard

you need to complete the entire 2-year program to be eligible for the bba program. I finished marketing at bcit but transferred to sfu instead to complete my degree there.

Well I had an avg of 73, I transferred to sfu and got 3.0 for that, but problem is when you apply to sfu business your gps gets reduced by .3 making it really hard to get in. Also, you only receive 30 credits when transferring and I was told they calculate your gpa from the 3 transferrable courses; marco econ, micro econ, and accounting 1.

That too, most of them in committed relationships or not interested at the moment. Lol, just make sure you make alot of good connections with people there, you WILL see them within the industry. It seems to be alot more difficult making these connections here at Sfu.

um.. if you transfer you only get 1/2 of the credits transfered (well at SFU..). You might as well start at SFU or another institution if you plan on transfering.

Not all the courses taken at BCIT are transferable to other places. The reason why I'm doing it at BCIT is that after my diploma, hopefully I am employed. Also going to see if the company I work for will pay for my BBA so I can take it part time or maybe even full time.

Thats my backup plan should things go awary at SFU, only reason that I did transfer was because of SFU's co-op program and that I believe many employers are biased when it comes to hiring people. They'll look at SFU and BCIT and will focus most of the effort on SFU, maybe its just me? However, the other side to this is that many jobs in the industry are acquired from the connections you make. Thats why im telling you right now to make those connections while in school and don't burn bridges. The most difficult part for me at BCIT was establishing those connections since I graduated at the age of 19 where everyone around me was around 23-26 and had already gained some "life experience".

My tip for you is to meet as many people as you can, but, don't be an ass or "that guy". For the record, I never was "that guy". PM me for details.

that is exactly my plan pretty much. if im employed and have a decent job with my diploma, ill just start working. if not ill the bba and try to get a masters or sumthign.

They're pretty cool, (depending on which path you take, I took Marketing Communications)
For Marketing Communications you have the option of either working for an agency or client side, both great places to be. For a first job, i'd probably take agency since you want to meet as many people as possible. Vancouver is home for some pretty big agencies as well; Cossette, DDB, NewAd (they do those friendly washroom ads), etc. Personally I cant wait until I finish school and get to work. Its quite exciting. I mean, technically I can work right now since I have my diploma but I really want a degree before I throw myself out there, haha.

At BCIT you'll learn quickly that team work is key and the only way you'll get something done is if you work together. For the final term, in marketing communications at least, you and your team work against other teams for a real client. An objective is given by the client and your team has to put together a complete integrated marketing communications plan (including budget and anticipated results). Difficult but very rewarding, looking at it now, its deffinately been an exciting and educational experience.

I want to take part in SFU's co-op program. I think its a good way to meet a future employer, especially with what the job market is today. Since I'm only 20 I wanted to get a feel of how University is before I become a "member of the work force" lol as well as receive a bit more of a diverse education in a different environment. Unfortunately, I also get this notion that employers are biased when it comes to hiring grads from SFU vs BCIT. The main thing i'm concerned about is being able to find a job once I finish my BBA. I feel that SFU does a better job preparing me for that compared to BCIT. I'm just Really really frustrated with SFU's recent admission changes that is really screwing me over right now.

Hey I want to go back to school after summer, starting to do my research now. I've been out of high school for basically two years working... My grade average was C+ for academic cources, but i sucked big time on math so I took applications (easy math).

What's my best option if I wanted to take marketing/business? I was thinking about Douglas College, becuase I need to upgrade my math and possibly english?

What kind of job can i get with marketing? right now I'm doing sales and it's pretty bad pay.

thanks in advance.

I believe they look at your english 12 grade and math 11 grade. Best thing to do is contact someone from BCIT to ask them about those requirements and where you could complete them, i'm sure they would happily point you in the right direction. As for jobs after completing the program, right after graduation its pretty normal to be working in a more "administrative" position; basically helping behind the scenes.

As you progress though you take on more different tasks. For example you could be working in a media company which basically sells ad space. Or you could be working at a company that specializes in eMarketing and social media marketing that build marketing strategies for companies that want a greater online presence (think of RS sponsors and what they're doing or much larger companies like Best Buy on twitter). Some companies specialize solely on public relations(Optimum PR) and they help other companies with their public relations efforts.

If theres a media source, theres a company that works with it. Of course there are other opportunities as well.

I can't say exactly,
What I can say is that my friend coming out of bcit (without bba) with his first job is making around 35k a year I think. Girl I was hooking up with before after UBC (in hr management though) was making around 35k in her first job too. Basically, when you come out, you shouldn't expect to be making a whole lot, but you do get more opportunities with one compared to the other. For example, with a degree you're going to have more opportunities with for managerial positions, I can't say the same if you have just a diploma.
