ITT: VW Golf owners *feedback*

hello,

i was wondering if any could help me with my next purchase. Looking forward to purchasing a 01 VW Golf 1.8T 5Sp under 170k for my daily driver. I'm recently new in this "euro scene" nor do i know much about VW or cars in general.

What should i be looking into before taking it home?

thanks.

You should be looking into good repair shops before taking it home.

I have a 2000 Jetta TDI. We're not talking about the same car exactly, but same general stuff.

Repairs can get pricey for the specialized stuff, and a 1.8T owner is better suited to tell you what that is at 170k, but general wear and tear items are pretty much exactly the same.

That said, high octane fuel, expensive oil and filters can add up.

Golf 1.8T's are rare, since they only made a handful in 2000-2001. They were also one of the few models that were imported from Germany.

Things to look out for:
-coil packs, window regulators, plastic waterpump (most opt for a metal one), and the timing belt

For an added piece of mind (and if your budget permits), I would look into a 2003 GTI or a 2003 Jetta with the updated AWP 1.8T engine. Stay far far away from the automatics on the Mk4 VWs.
